Can someone please let me know what papers I need to present at the driver's license department in order to renew my Thai driver's license, thank you.

1) Proof of residence

2) Passport & Visa

3) Medical Certificate

& do the full test.

Have you a licence from another country?

4) Licence from home country

5) IDP to accompany your home country DL (if not in English).

& avoid the full test - just take the Reaction test, Colour Blindness, Proximity tests & Watch Video.

"Have you a licence from another country? "

Even if the OP does have that, it doesn;t matter anymore, it is a renewal of an expired Thai DL. Will be full test.

Following the rules published by the DLT:

If expired for more than one year: redo theory test ("only").

If expired for more than three years: redo theory and driving test.

So if you feel confident you could do the theory test.

(besides the rest that is already described)

It would be helpful to know what your situation regarding home country (which?) license and IDP is?

Don't show the expired Thai licence, apply for a new 2y licence, there is no check

This might work as I also assume they don't check against a database of existing licenses (for foreigners). But I can't remeber any report about such an attempt.

Accepted home country license required.

Don't worry it's not too hard to get another one Or just be like most Thai drivers and don't have one at all. I did the test to get my 2-year license Now I got my 5-year License and it so easy. I think my test to get the 2-year license was. Hand over the left eye. Look at traffic lights What color is that? Did anybody go for a driving test  with a Thai tester Maybe they would not be so keen on that because the farang being tested would Know more than the tester lol

The Thai tester would feel like he was being tested lol and might fail

Not correct, all is in the database.

In this case only the clean way will work: redo theory test (expired less than 3 years).

You did not do a driving test. You converted your national licence.

Whilst I agree that a lot of Thais don't bother with a licence, as a foreigner here I would certainly not recommend going down this route! Yes if you get pulled you might end up with a 400 Baht fine, which seems cheap until you consider the reality if you have an accident.

First thing that will ruin your cheap saving scheme will be the fact that your vehicle insurance is VOID - Now, being a foreigner, do you expect to get off as lightly as a Thai? Suddenely it doesn't seem such a good idea after all. You will immediately be the Golden Goose that just laid a massive egg for them.

Check with the DLT because when I last had my licence you did not need to take the entire thing again if the expiry was less than 3 years, things may have changed but that was the case a couple of years ago.

I think the point I am trying to make to close this subject is getting a Thai license is very easy compared to Australia and does not cost an arm and a leg You are right on every point sir that is why I did get my license but will surrender it at 65 because I a firm believer when you get older your mind is not as sharp as it should be. And you really need to be sharp and on top of your game to drive in Thailand

Come back when you’re 65 and tell us whether you’ve stopped driving

I'm nearly 76 and have been driving a car here for over 8 years. Had a small accident with a motorbike passing on the inside in the first week here, no one hurt, but nothing since. Just renewed my licence for another 5 years so good to go until I'm 80.

You don't need to do a driving test for your 2 year, if you already have a licence (with photo) from your home country. You usually have to do the colour, reaction and perception tests and now watch a video, but it seems that varies from province to province.

Not true.

The insurance may be declared void, but that depends on the policy conditions. And here in Thailand many policies don't have that condition.

Agree with the rest of your post, but better stick to the facts.

I don't know the answer.  All I do know is that the rules have changed in the 6 years since I did my 1 year temp license (now it's 2 years?) and since I upgraded to a 5 year permanent license.  I'm not claiming to know what all those rule changes are- just that what worked a few years back is no longer valid.

Beware of dated information.

It depends on the individual, I'm 76 and only had one minor accident in 8 years in Thailand.

You'd know if you had a licence from your home country or not.

Well, you were kind of denying that in post #14 when someone said you'd just converted your home licence to a Thai one, and yes, I had an Aussie licence when I first got my 2 year Thai licence.
