Korat gets green light for Bt2bn garbage-fuelled power plant

The Muang Nakhon Ratchasima Municipality has the green light from the Interior Ministry to build a Bt2 billion, garbage-fuelled thermal power plant, the deputy mayor of the municipality said on Wednesday.

 

Boonlua Charoenwat said the plant would burn some 500 tonnes of garbage a day to generate 9.3 megawatts of electricity.

 

Boonlua said the project is the second stage of the municipality's measures to clear over 500,000 tonnes of garbage in three districts of Muang, Chalerm Phra Kiart and Kham Thalay Sor.

 

The plant will be built on Second Army land so the municipality will sign a memorandum of understanding with the military on cooperation, Boonlua said.

 

He said the municipality will later draft a term of reference for a private sector to bid for the project, which will be financed by the winning bidder.

 

The bidding may take place in November and the construction will take three years, Boonlua said.

 

The winning bidder will be authorised to sell electricity to the Provincial Electricity Authority for 25 years and be paid about Bt400 per tonne removed, Boonlua added.

That sounds good ... but they will need to filter out the toxic emissions .

But if that could reduce the ever growing garage problem , it's the way to go ...

No it is not. The 9.3 mw of power is the design output of the plant. You are confusing it with megawatt hours.

9.3 MW of power works out to 81,500 MW Hours of power per year with continuous operation.  

Biomass fuel power plants are typically about 35% efficient.  Therefore, a 9.3 MW power plant will require about 47,000 tons of fuel per year, or 130 tons per day.  This varies depending upon the dryness of the fuel.  To burn 500 tonnes per day, the biomass fuel must be quite damp.
