All Western all the time?

Is there a way to communicate with someone with a different view? I have questions about how Western Chiang Mai is. All the information seems to be directed at expats who want to duplicate a Western way of life, food & drink, a/c, pools, servants.

 

I've been living without such things and am put off by the image created but drawn to visit and perhaps retire. I cancelled my August paid flight and visit for this concern.

There are hundreds of villages where you can live any lifestyle you desire.

2 bed houses rent for about 4000-5000bht/month and up.

No need to ever see another white face or speak English again.

I've just got out of my aircon room and having bacon and eggs etc .Then I'll go for a swim in my  pool and after that play snooker in my  snooker room. I'm trying hard not to have any western luxurys but I have just given up wine.

It is true that organized mass brain-washing of new retirees in Chiang Mai is carried out, although there are several possible cults that may be responsible, with as yet unknown nefarious intentions, and methods.

Plenty of natural waterfalls around Chiang Mai, I like to swim in the wild.

Not sure what to think of Chiang Mai. Still.

Yes you are right but with a name like yogi you are kinda asking for it on TV.The beauty of Thailand is you can pretty well do anything you want as long as you don't offend other people.

Stay legal and stay happy.you need to come here and create your own little world.I did.

For the one, hopefully sincere, response that pointed out one need not speak English or see a white face, that is not my intention.
Where I live now it is a balance. I can easily navigate my day with meditation, temples, Indian and Western culture and events.
I cannot get the same retirement Visa benefits that Thailand offers and that is why I am searching.
Trolls message me separately and I will pay the toll if you can refrain from attacking openly again.

Those are low-tier luxuries that a certain class of people indulge in everywhere across the world, regardless of country, culture or availability of Western products. (By "servants" you mean "waiters", yeah? Cos nobody has servants anymore since the 1900's in the traditional full-time sense - unless it's a live-in maid). Pools and servants, yes we all have them here !, 

You can live which ever way you want here,with pools and servants,

or up in the hills living in a shack,it's what YOU choose to do,but you

You can arrange whatever degree of "sophistication" and/or "contact" you prefer.

 

Treat Chiang Mai as a starting point rather than as a destination.

 

Language may be more of an issue (English more widely spoken in India?) if you're looking for a "genuine" upcountry lifestyle.

 

Might be better to re-start in the Buddhist forum, given that there may be members there who have already duplicated your current lifestyle?

It's what you make it, pretty simple.

Let me understand....You cancelled a paid for flight because you "thought" CM was "too westernized".....

You plan on possibly living here but can't come here to take a look and get a feel for where you "might" live?

Then you ask on an expat forum for an opposite view from what you "think" is happening.....

I'm guessing that meditative lifestyle isn't working to well for you....

It might be good for you to jump on a plane & investigate for yourself....

CM offers many things for many people....From the meditative, to the never grow ups, to the grown up responsible types....

It's a pretty easy place to get a feel of, but if you don't explore you'll never know....

I came here and looked 3 extended times before I decided to live here....All for good reasons & reaffirmation of what I had experienced.....

I manage without a pool (nearby & convenient, but have never been in), don't have a maid, don't do the bar thing, and don't go around looking for farang company or opinions (don't miss it).....

Do have a nice house, wife, & family....But, that's my life......

There's a lot to get involved with here as much as you want - or uninvolved with.....And nobody's going to pressure you either way.....

But, you'll never figure that out if you don't get here and look for yourself....I rented a car & explored when I first came here & suggest you do the same....Baht buses, tuktuks, scooters don't do it for me....

You don't need one western trapping to be happy here.....I'm sure there will be some you appreciate, (international restaurants/dining, medical facilities, etc)....

I can be in CM with everything that it has to offer in 30 minutes.....But, right now I'm listening to birds singing - and nothing else, no traffic, no noise.....It's peaceful....

 

But, I would suggest A.C.....

So what are you trying to get at?

 

You can have both in Chiang Mai - 10-15 minutes out of town in the right direction and you won't see a white face but you'll still easy access to western mod cons if that's what you mean by a "balance."

 

I live ~20 kms out of the center of town, no farangs where I live but I'm still only a 10 minute drive away to western food, 2o minute drive from world class shopping.

Although it is nice to live an alternative lifestyle in the West , living like a person from another Country .

   Its different living in a foreign country , nearly all Thai food contains either  rice or noodles and that gets repetitive eating three times a day , so, Western food is sometimes required .

   It can get extremely hot here , so, sometimes a/c is a necessity and its nice to take a dip in a swimming pool .

   Not sure why you mention servants , as I've not seen that mentioned before .

   You are making the mistake of differentiating between Thais and Westerners , many Thais also like western food , a/c, swimming pools etc.

   You are looking for a primitive lifestyle , many Thais have that lifestyle and they want a developed life

I live in a small village in rural Khampaeng Phet. I am the only full time white face around here and the next nearest westerner to me is 5 km away. Nice guy from Belgium but speaks Thai and Flemish/Walloon but virtually no English. The next nearest to me are 20 km away and there are a few others sprinkled around.

 

If I want western food, apart from 7/11 the nearest BigC/Tops/Makro is 65 km away. If they don't have what I want I make my own western style with what I can get.

 

There is a loose group of us who meet every couple of weeks for a beer or two, something to eat and we set Thailand on its right course. Then the next meet we set Thailand on its right course once again.

 

If you are comfortable with your own and/or family company this is a good way to live and not that expensive. OTOH if you crave westerners around, western food etc you need to be in somewhere like CM or CR or the other bigger cities.

 

lordblackadders post #26 seems a good compromise for you.

 

I hope that you get lucky in your search.

I see a western lifestyle as putting money before all else and obsessing over health care.

Not much to do with what you eat .... in the UK I usually ate, Mexican, Chinese, Indian and a few Doner Kebabs for a change (so nearly always something with rice).
