Video: Teen motorcyclists injured as pick-up does U-turn from left lane in Trat

A Thai pick-up driver told reporters that "he never saw" a motorcycle coming as he did a U-turn from the left lane of a road in Trat, eastern Thailand, yesterday.

 

CCTV showed Pongporn Saleesoon, 24, slow down then pull across the oncoming bike. 

 

Both the riders on the Honda Wave were 15 years old - they were named as Natthakorn Thana and Thaweewut Keuakoon. 

 

Thaweewut is the owner of the bike and was riding pillion, reported Daily News.

 

They were both taken to Trat Hospital though there was no report on their injuries. 

 

Pongporn told reporters that he did not see the motorcycle as he did a U-turn from the left lane. 

 

His pick-up has Kampheangphet plates. The bike was registered in Trat.

Motorcycle was going too fast and moved to the right (toward center lane) prior to collision. The motorcycle could have easily moved slightly to his left and passed safely behind the truck, if he had been paying attention to what was going on.

Lucky no one was hurt by the flying helmet

Not condoning the actions of the truck driver one bit, but had the bike rider been looking ahead he would easily have seen and anticipated what the truck was going to do and reacted accordingly.  But....

Ah, the anti bike brigade are out in force quickly on this one.

Everyone should know by now a Thai pickup driver needs two lanes to turn left and any number to turn right I guess they learned a hard lesson????

My thoughts exactly. There was a similar thread a couple of days where it was exactly the same. Me personally, when I drive a car, I try not to pull stupid u-turns in front of oncoming vehicles. But that's just me.

Weren't the Flying Helmets a motorcycle display team? Did they have an unblemished record?

He didn't see them because he didn't look; he was doing what most Thai's do, the 'I'm going there' attitude and everyone else can get stuffed !

Glad to see there are others, reading thaivisa thought it was only me.

Looking forward, thinking forward, paying attention, reasonable speed ,keeping to the left...

Like the dark bike passing earlier.

Totally avoidable.

 

OK forget it, a 15 yr old who has either no driving license or has recently done his x hours sleeping session (aka. tutoring) for DL.

Helmet flying away...

 

In the very last fraction of a second he starts moving to the right(!).

 

An exemplary video how not to drive on the roads here and why about 50 motorbike riders die each day.

Yup and that's because  they are too lazy to steer by hand over hand.....

Yep blame the innocent bike rider for not avoiding a stupid idiot in a truck doing another death defying U turn !!

Difficult when sitting with chin over wheel

It always puzzles me what seating positions they have.

But again: no proper driving schools/lessons, no traffic education whatsoever.

Of course the pick up driver can't see. They are trained to think the whole road belong to them. Its their own world!

 

Side mirrors and rear view mirror are useless in Thailand. Manufacturers should remove them to cut cost.

I'm always suprised why other drivers don't horn to idiots who even can't make a corner/U-turn. For them it's normal to brake for it...

Same goes for parking, it takes ages because they never learned how to park. But it seems that nobody cares...they all have plenty of time and like to sit in the cool car.

Generally you must be able to stop your vehicle in time no matter what happens in front of you. The only exception is a car door suddenly opening into your lane. What if this had been a child suddenly crossing the street? The truck was going slow enough that anyone should have been able to avoid it. Gotta feel sorry for the kids though. Nobody taught them basic driving skills, and sudden stopping on a bike can be tricky.

I don't understand what is going through the heads of some people that are either riding motorbikes or driving cars here in thailand, thinking ahead isnt one of them, If you have spent a considerable amount of time here either riding a motorbike or a car then you should know what to expect, so god knows why you wouldnt know if you grew up here, well anyway I hope they both make a speedy recovery, but by the speed they hit the truck, if they do survive theyl probably have life changing injuries.....

The truck is larger, it is to the advantage of the motorcyclist to pay attention to what is in front of him/her.

Correct.

 

Of course the truck driver didn't see the car, but the real question is, did he even look.

True, but nobody taught the car driver not to pull out when the way is not clear. That is why when cars and trucks pull out from side streets without checking if there is approaching traffic it is always the fault of the approaching traffic. If they were paying attention "you must always be able to stop your vehicle in time no matter what happens in front of you". Do motorcycle riders drive poorly in Thailand, yes, but it is generally the poor driving by truck and car drivers that kill them.

Motorcycles here are a culling mechanism / unemployment solution.

shoot the truck driver on spot in preemptive action before he does more harm

Completely neglecting who was at fault, a 2 wheeler and a 4 wheeler were involved in exactly the same accident. 

 

The driver of the 4 wheeler walked away with no injuries.  The folks on the 2 wheeler didn't.

 

Another cautionary tale.

 

  that hardly fits the definition of a proper U Turn. A U turn should only be made and only be allowed from a proper traffic light/intersection.  Not saying that I haven't done such a maneuver a few times in my life on quiet no traffic present roads, but just pulling out and turning around from any spot in a road is so against the law (in most countries anyway), I hope that truck driver is slammed in court both civilly and criminally.  Oh wait, this is Thailand

the bike was already in 2nd lane when the truck driver decided to cut him off, the bike had the right of way,

and it is the duty of the truck to wait until the other lanes he intend to cut off is free of traffic.

 

by the time the truck had successfully cut off the second lane, it was too late for anything, the bike tried to turn into the third lane as a last desperate resort, but alas, it was far and away too late

 

do you even grasp the concept of right of way ?
