Wastewater was flowing into the sea at Koh Phi Phi in Krabi as business operators have been caught releasing untreated water and waste into the sea. The issue has gone viral in social media with local officials scrambling to respond.

Black water was photographed lapping the shores of Loh Dalam beach on Koh Phi Phi five days ago. One of the local business operators claimed this black water was mostly from a hotel and restaurant operator who are releasing untreated water into the sea. They didn’t disclose the names of the offending businesses.

Trying to figure out who to prosecute for posting the photos?

You will get jail time if you happened to unknowingly pick up a coral or other protected sea creatures, but poisoning the beach waters with sewerage and sicking sight of black muk and they all turn a blind eye...

That's a very relevant phrase there, as I'd think blindness could possibly be one of the results after coming into contact with this 'raw sewage' in the sea.

Welcome to Thailands national marine park. ????

Ultimately, it's the tourists fault.

Obviously. If they were constipated there wouldn't be a problem.

It’s a “no-brainer” Thailand when you do not have legitimate building codes for resorts / hotels or fail to be “proactive” about caring for your (once) pristine beaches with building regulations and having sewage treatment plants ( that work).

Look at Pattaya Bay-one big cess pool because of raw sewage flowing into the bay. ( “Out of sight, out of mind” doesn’t always work.)

Water treatment is not rocket science. The technology has been around a long time. The solution is to hold the headmen and the local politicians responsible for specific areas, where the treatment facilities have not been built, are poorly maintained, or do not work. There is plenty of money to build and maintain these facilities. It is just a matter of whether or not a community or area can get past the greed of the local authorities, and get them to spend the money, rather than amass a larger fortune. Major consequences have to be put into place. If not by the authorities, than by the local community.

Why does the waste/outfall from this hotel/restaurant go directly into the sea and not to a water treatment plant?

A smart plumber /  builder / electrician ran the pipe to the nearest drain to save on very expensive plastic pipe :whistling:

Black water flows into the sea at Koh Phi Phi

They could rename the island to Koh Phi Phi Poo Poo.
