3 underage sex workers rescued in raids on 2 Ang Thong karaoke joints

Ronnarong Thipsiri, head of the Department of Provincial Administration's investigation and suppression division and Sakda Bandasak, sheriff of Ang Thong’s Muang district held a press conference on Monday (October 14) to announce the results of recent raids on a karaoke restaurant and a karaoke massage parlor in Ang Thong province, which were allegedly using under-age girls as prostitutes.

 

“We collaborated with Damrong Dhama Center and anti-human trafficking organizations and learnt that two karaoke joints in Ang Thong were employing underage sex workers,” he said. “These were the Chil Chil Karaoke on Highway No. 3064, Pa Ngiew sub district of Muang district and Jittra Karaoke on the ground floor of a hotel in Muang district.”

 

During the raids, police identified 6 sex workers offering services to a group of customers. Four of these were Thai and the other two Laotians, and three were under the age of 18. The youngest worker was just 15 years old. They also found a large numbers of used condoms.

 

Officials arrested Somjit Phetwijit, 50, and Aphirom Pheungpracha, 36, who admitted to being the respective owners of the karaoke bars. They were charged with human trafficking, solicitation of prostitution, prostitution of an underage person, and opening entertainment facility without a license.

 

One of the 17-year-old sex workers of Jittra Karaoke told the press she was hired to sit and drink with clients and was paid Bt50 each time a client ordered a drink. “Clients can buy sex for Bt1,500 a time or Bt3,500 for a whole night,” she said. “They can either use massage rooms in the back or bring the girls to other hotels of their choice.”

I think underage prostitution is bad and the bar owners should definitely be prosecuted for allowing it.  That said I would not be surprised if those girls did not feel like they were 'rescued'.  Hopefully they were not forced or sold into it.  I do know that still happens here.

What I would like to know is how they decide which places they raid and which not. And who knows about this - in case they want to inform the business owners about official visits...

And does anybody ask the rescued girls if they wanted to be rescued? Or are all girls by definition rescued?

What would happen to those girls if i.e. they go with a customer and the next day they would not return? Would the bad guys hunt them down and punish them? Or no problem, another one will start working a day or two later?

And what will those rescued girls do in a month or two? Will they look again for a similar job? Or are they now rescued and they will go to school or work in a factory somewhere?

 

I don't know the answers to these questions. And maybe all these girls are forced to work there and they are in chains so that they can't escape. But maybe not. Maybe all this is a lot more dramatic in the media then it is in reality.

 

I don't support bars who hire 15 year old girls as sex workers. But there is a big difference if the girls decided they can make a lot of money in those jobs or if someone forced them to do it. If someone forced them then throw the bad guys into jail and keep them in jail.

I have visited quite a lot of places in the north part of Thailand. Life on the farms and small

villages are, hand to mouth, and there are a lot of poor families. This is the facts, and when some of the teens get to 16 or 17, they go off the farm to try find work that will make money

for them and their fathers and mothers.  I met a few of these young women who had

ID's showing that they were older, and that is how this whole situation can and does

happen. It is Asia, bye the way. It is not where most of the commenters on this

forum are from, try to remember that and that Thailand and other countries

in Asia are a lot different that say countries like Canada, USA, Australia, etc..

With these stories, and those about expats being arrested for crimes - I wish there was a way to find out the end result. What happens at the trial, are they convicted, what is the punishment?

Some very high profile cases make the news, but not many.

How does this in any way relate to "low life pattaya paedophiles"? I have never met a farang in Pattaya who actively seeks out underage girls. Just an urban myth.

 

The places such as in the OP cater exclusively for Thai males. Almost all paedophiles in Thailand are Thai.

Some of the karaoke bars/goldfish bowls are owned by the BiB and all donate their monthly brown envelopes to the BiB.

I have just returned from a very poor village in the depths of Issan yesterday. There are thousands of such villages. Most people I met were struggling to survive.

Struggling in what way ?

They may be poor, but they can survive with no much or any money 

Their survival isnt at risk through starving or freezing to death or anything else .

You weren't there, you didn't see it. Don't comment on something you know nothing about from your home in the UK.

 

"Struggling to survive" was in no way an exaggeration. Heartbreaking.

 

I'm not wealthy and certainly not a soft touch but gave out numerous 100 baht notes, a few 500 baht notes and a couple of 1000 baht notes. Met one 7 year old girl with no parents and being taken care of (badly) by an aunt who was herself struggling. I bought her clothes, toys and took her for days out and fed her well. Would have dearly loved to have brought her back to live with me and give her a better life but just not practical. I cried when I had to leave her. Will visit her again soon. Highly likely she will end up working in a karaoke bar when she's older.
