Car runs over its driver at gas station in Chonburi

Sanook reported that a car ran over its own driver after he looked underneath at a gas station. 

 

Pakhawat, 36, had been having gear problems and while his wife was in the toilets he had a look to see if he could identify the problem. 

 

He left his Mitsubishi Pajero in "Park" but with the engine still running. 

 

However, the car started moving forward and crushed his ribs and caused breathing problems. 

 

The vehicle went over a concrete barrier and ended up by a walkway outside the lavatories.

 

His wife came out to find her husband screaming in agony. 

 

The police and a rescue foundation were called and Pakhawat was taken to hospital after being given first aid at the scene. 

 

Police found that the indicator on the speedometer dial showed that the car was in "Drive" even though the gear stick was in "P".

 

They warned people without technical knowledge not to trust their cars. 

 

The incident happened at a PTT station on Route 331 in Ban Bung. 

 

The victim's wife said that they were on their way back to Nakhon Pathom from a visit to Rayong when her husband noted the seven year old Pajero was experiencing gear problems.

Because dashboard showed car was in D drive , hence he was having problems with gears. Gear shows one thing but dash another . He should have at least pulled the hand brake 

The car was obviously not in D when he got out, or it would have started moving immediately when he got out.

There's no mention of what kind of gear problem. Having gear problems doesn't automatically mean that the car is slipping into other gears, and definitely not that it's jumping from Park to D.

Huh? It's a bloody automatic. There's only 2 gears, Drive and Reverse!

actually autos normally have  4, 6 or 8 gears, plus reverse.  My auto car has 6, my last car, also auto, had 8.

Yes, and unless the vehicle has one of them 'sport' options, they are internally selected whereas in a manual transmission, the driver selects the gears he wants. The SUV in the OP, standing there idling in Park only had Drive or Reverse as operator selections.

 

I reckon an interlock went out. There's a minimum 2 of them on an A/T that prevents moving from P to D, one is the foot on the brake and the other is an actuator button on the shifter. There's every possibility this guy saw something loose or otherwise odd while he was underneath, tugged on it and that shifted the transmission into D while the shifter stayed in P as reported.

Potential gear problem, engine running, creeping under the car.

P-R-D-S-L, that's the meager choice of my automatic.

And my fellow Thais always look puzzled when I change to S at certain situations.

Just don't fiddle while engine running and hand-break not firmly attached

Why,they do not switch the engine off ,same reason parked  out side 7-11 with engine running ,got to keep the Air Con going ,can not have a hot car.

Different way to look at it. Lots of fuel vapour about. If you switch off, fill up and then start the engine lots of little sparks can be be produced by the starter for example.

Worked near tank farms and gas plants where it was a strict rule to 'NOT' switch off the engines of vehicles delivering bits and pieces.

Some drivers would automatically switch off and the keys would be taken off them and they had to wait until the vehicle was towed out or gas checks were carried out by safety to clear them starting the engine again.

More worrying is the habit of filling plastic spare fuel containers from the pump without any earthing for static, worst is holding the container while it's being filled instead of putting it on the ground to try and get rid of static charges.

what about park, neutral and "L" in the case of my triton?????!!!

i always SWITCH OFF when refueling ITS CALLED BEING SAFE !!!!! My Father told me to do years and years ago, especially with filling with petrol..... !!

All auto boxes now have these isolator switches so you can't start the engine in D, R or L

( sometimes even in N ) 

When they start to go wrong they can cause all sorts of problems.
