Seven people are now dead and at least 2 injured following the collapse of a petrol station construction site near the Home Pro building in Thepkasattri Road in Thalang, northern Phuket. The latest source of deaths and injuries comes from Thai Rath.

Construction labourers were stuck under an enormous slab of concrete early this afternoon at 12.50pm. At least five people were rushed to hospital immediately following the collapse. At least three were believed to have died on the construction site.

Efforts continued during the afternoon to recover more bodies as officials and police move in to assess the damage and start a full investigation into the avoidable tragedy.

Meanwhile, the Department of Labor Protection and Welfare in Phuket says they still investigating the Rawai collapse of a condo building under construction at the VIP Mercury Condominium project. In that incident one Burmese worker died. Eight other workers, mostly Burmese, were injured in that collapse.

The two incidents put severe doubt on the quality of the construction industry on a busy island clamouring for the completion of developments and infrastructure.

This will have no bearing on construction pace on Phuket....

typical reporting...4 dead 3 yet recovered...7 dead is the appropriate title...

10k And a wai to each family should suffice....

I wonder if OSHA will follow up?

Cheap labour which is replaceable... immigrant construction workers hold no value in Thailand other than being able to do the <deleted> work no Thai wants to do!

This will bring them out in their hordes.

Incompetence

Corruption by building and development moguls.

Police involvement

Etc etc

All sorts of reasons ( but little proof and lots of thai hatred ) why the expat x file aficionados will be salivating at another opportunity to malign their hosts

All Thai so far!

"The four dead were identified as Jirachai Wonghajak, 35; Thaweerat Daetphan (no age given); Mrs Pornpimon Waewwong, 21, from Ubon Ratchathani; and Mr Krisana Kanbuth, 33, from Petchaburi." Thais are returning to these jobs as rural businesses are winding down across the north..

this is what happens with no health and safety concerns/regulations, suspect framework supporting it as well more than likely. The workers & their families are the ones that suffer, the owners/builders are only worried about how much profit they can make and what corners they can cut to increase it which leeds to these accidents, lets hope they charge the people running the show and impose big fines but being Thailand I doubt it

Surprised as it usually takes a few years for new houses here to start to fall to pieces, lets hope the workers families get some decent compensation and the culprits prosecuted for manslaughter, both doubtful.

I had many a faulty thing built in phuket when i lived there and not on purpose but it seemed that was the ony possible outcome. It aint the problem of the burmese workers o uch as they sorta know what they are doing all be it will little fear and they seem nice people for the most part also. The problem i saw was the thais organizing everything and skimping on anything and everything with profit the only consideration.

Feel sorry for one guy who bought one of the places i had extended. Aparantley just after a couple months the extension started to crack and crumble and had to be removed.

rip.

BS

Dont believe any thai trying to give you a scoop of interesting info. There is no cover up and it was not the CIA flying a plane into the building.

Maybe because as your title suggests, the truth hurts. The irony.????

Again, why just have a go at the Thai builders cutting corners and cheating on materials.

Every builder that I have seen or used here does the same. French, English, Israeli, Kiwi etc They all do the minimum (or even less) in order to maximise profit.

One French builder, building on a site near my place, used under-specced rebar on the columns of his own house. It started to lean. LOTS. He had to pull the whole thing down.

Even my son in law, who is a builder, does it. He happily tells me tales of the scams that he pulls. I would never let him near any construction that I wanted.

It is not just a Thai trait.

Rant over - RIP to the poor souls that died.

Wait until there is an earthquake!

My thoughts exactly.... Was in the Newcastle earthquake in Aus and our buildings are supposed to be built well... Even so, well built buildings lay in rubble... I was in Defecne and was called in.. Very eerie during the night with things still dropping and buildings still  creaking...
