Too much controls/checkpoints kill the fun, everything good in life is dangerous.

I don't see any problem if you have fun to kill yourself

it's a problem if you kill other people

i don't have to stay at home just because of

your selfish and totaly irresponsible attitude

nothing fun in driving drunk, particularly in a city where there are everywhere and

at every hour of the day and night cheap taxis, bahtbus and motosai to get you back home safe.

I recently got pulled over by the cops for one of their routine collect money stops, and while I had everything, I heard more than one tourist moaning loudly that they were paying out money for the stops that were "everywhere" every single day, and would never be coming back. Fair enough, they didn't have the right documents, but I have never been to a tourist resort that so actively looks to fleece their guests in such a way. Combine this with the murder of the town as it used to be and is it any surprise that the place is a ghost town?

This is the thing that irks me the most. And I'm talking about daytime shopping for groceries, going to a doctor's appointment or doing business at the insurer's office. After handing over the cash deposit for the rental of the (ordinary looking) motorcycle, I start to get the queasy feeling I'm going to get stopped for riding while farang. I'm always trying to read where the cops are and where the moto taxi guys are going. Come to Pattaya and relax. Not any more. It's gotten worse and worse.

PS I have a Thai licence and always wear a good helmet without fail.

a gal that i ran into recently that i first met ages ago when gogo bars had slimmer staff and reasonable prices told me she used to make a lot more money when reasonable prices led to more customer spending multiplied to the X power.

The problem are the DUI check: 2 beers and you'r done:

- 1st time is just a night soi 9 + a fine in tribunal

- 2nd time and you might be deported and blacklisted ! If you are an expat, you can't no more drive & drink in bars, that's the new rule.

Why does anyone feel there's a need to drink and drive in and around Pattaya? If it was in Bahn Nawk with little or no alternatives to shank's pony then a car is handy but there's absolutely no need to commit any degree of DUI in Pattaya, none whatsoever.

All those (DUI) checkpoints have ruined the place for expats and without the expats the beer bar scene has died.

Let me fix it for you

All those (DUI) checkpoints have ruined the place for alcoholics expats too stingy to pay a taxi

i prefer by far see the beer bar scene died (Even if it's sad) than more and more people killed (The drunk one and the others involved) on the road carnage because they drive drunk

but each of us have his own priority of course

the issue is police will negotiate for a cash fee and the offender is free to go versus the uniform actual enforcement of drunk drivers.  this is besides the bs attempt to get money for nothing

The end is here. Yesterday when I walked home at 10 pm everything was empty in Central Pattaya. Even the Soi dogs were sleeping already. Bars were dark and had a sign "Closed. Please don't disturb." Frustrated I wanted to buy a beer in a 7-Eleven. When I entered the shop a sleepy looking cashier shouted angrily "What you want!" and so I left without anything - not even with a plastic bag. The motorbike taxi drivers were sleeping and had a big sign "Please don't disturb. Call Grab for a ride". This is not Pattaya anymore.

Seriously? I just came back in May '19. It's really THAT bad?

Music to my ears.

Time to raise prices across the board...hotel, barfine, ST, LT

I used to be a regular visitor to the LOS and fly from Europe several times a year.  Pattaya was exciting.  Fun. The night-time entertainment was attractive. It is all gone.  The only entertainment left in Pattaya is watching the jet-ski scam.

Nowadays I still fly frequently from Europe to S.E. Asia, but mostly I go elsewhere.

Crazy visa rules and apparently arbitrary decisions by IO's mean that after a couple of entries a year, no matter how short, one is never quite sure if one is to be denied entry, and as a tourist I just don't need that uncertainty.

Thailand has become the "LOC" (Land Of "Cannot") whatever a tourist might want to do to on holiday the answer is always the same: cannot.

I was in Udon Thani, eating in a restaurant.  It was one of the many, many, many "no alcohol" days.  I saw a western couple who were incredulous that they could not have a bottle of wine with their evening meal, like they could almost anywhere else on the planet. Then the BIB drove past and saw a water bottle on my table.  They stopped and came into the restaurant just to make sure that it really was water in the bottle!

I can have far more fun in Europe than in Thailand.

And wristbands? Really? Why not just tattoo all the tourists' arms with a number?

So why would I visit Thailand?

You have to say that the authorities have brought this upon themselves. In their desperation to save face and stop anything the slightest bit smutty from going on in town, they destroyed exactly what so many people visited for. People wanting a fun week or two away came here because that was what was on offer, and they didn't give a damn for temples and nature beauty spots, a point obviously missed by the folks that have killed the place.

I am sure the average bar or hotel owner would far prefer it to go back to how it was, rather than go broke in a "family friendly" but empty resort.

no brain no pain

Hotels release blocks of rooms for availability on agoda, booking, etc.. These booking sites do not show what any hotel's total room availability is. Since hotels will be hedging on charging higher rack rates for the inevitable walk-in customers this weekend, these websites won't be an accurate indicator of actual occupancy.

Not true. Agoda always shows that it is the last room available

I went to Pattaya was going to stay 3 weeks stayed 2 days and left. The hotel was over priced for goti got and would not come down on the price and the girls want 3 times more than last year. I am now in Udon Thani and everything is 3 times less than Pattaya and the girls are cheaper and better looking and cleaner. NO more Pattaya for me

It was the Western (not Indians and Chinese) tourists who used to party in Pattaya by night.  Just look at how the overvalued Thai baht has long time made it way to expensive for Europeans to visit Thailand and now the Americans are feeling the same.  Furthermore the TM30/TM28 are keeping expats from traveling inside of  Thailand, not to mention the complete attitude of the Immigration office and government.

Hong Kong hotel rooms are deeply discounted at the moment, I hear.  And if you are not looking for trouble you can make your way around town.  Pattaya hotel operators could learn a lesson here.

Caught sleeping more like...

for a multitude of reasons Pattaya is dying on it's feet [or should I say back]

The strength of the baht does put off some travelers, price of flights etc make it out of reach for some with a family, westerners can have a vacation in any Euro city for half the cost of coming here.

Then the exchange rate hits home when they work out the spending money.

Facilities that are not up to a world class resort, hotels are ok but step into any street & what facilities are there?

Rows of bars, go-go joints, massage parlours all clamouring for business is all that's on offer.

a beach that's woefully inadequate & beach vendors like vultures.

Taxis that rip you off at every opportunity, it's hardly a place to come & enjoy anymore.

City hall that seems to be stuck in a rut with people that should be put out to pasture, T.A.T that is oblivious to what's going on and refuse to see the truth.

Well newsflash... social media is sharing the news worldwide in nano seconds, the good & the bad

before Pataya thought it could hide away & the real truth would never get out, people are voting with their collective feet.

A credible Government and Local Authority in this kind of scenario, would now be thinking " Now is the time to inject huge amounts of Money Etc into Pattaya in order to bring it into the present time.

Pattaya is stale, to say the least. It has been on a downturn in many ways for 5 years or more now.

The City is covered in nothing but Concrete, there are no Green spaces, the Infrastructure is at best shoddy, and its controlled mainly by Criminal Gangs.

Time for a  radical rethink on what is Pattaya, and what is needed from the City going into the future.

Or, is it not even worth the effort and expense of saving ?

This has a lot to do with the hard line Thais have taken on Retirees. I am not going to go into detail

but they have moved on since Thailand does not want them This is part of the result you get

It is not going to improve unless you make it easier for retirees They have money and they will spend it but find far more hospitable countries that are happy to have them

It is very bad. Just some days ago the immigration detained a German overstayer just to find out afterwards that he was the only tourist left here in Pattaya. Desperately he was searching for sex and overstayed because he didn't know that the 3 Pattaya prostitutes have been removed long time ago already.
