British man seriously ill with flu like virus in Thailand does not have Chinese Coronavirus

 

 

A British man who is fighting for his life in hospital after being struck down with flu-like symptoms, has not contracted the Chinese Coronavirus, it has been confirmed.

 

Ashley Shore, was on Koh Phi Phi when he became seriously ill with a flu virus on 27 December. 

 

He was rushed by boat to nearby Phuket where his condition worsened and he was put on a ventilator. 

 

It was initially feared he may have contracted the Chinese Coronavirus, which has been contracted by more than 200 people and contributed to four deaths.

 

However, doctors have since confirmed the 32 year old, who hails from Lancashire in the north of England, does not have the Chinese virus but a severe strain of flu.

 

Ashely’s parents who were on holiday in Spain when they found out their son had been taken ill have rushed to be by his bedside. 

 

He is currently in the intensive care unit Bumrungrad Hospital in Bangkok.

 

On Saturday he underwent a five hour operation to remove obcesses and fluid from his lungs.

 

While Ashley does have medical insurance, his friends and family have set up a crowdfunding page to help support his parents while they stay with him in Thailand.

I'm afraid travelling and staying here with your son is a normal expense in the curcumstances that unless parents are destitute they should finance themselves, just like all other families do and has been done in the past before online begging began. Son has insurance so no unmanigable bills and so the family pay their own travel expenses to fly out and stay. An unexpected cost but that's part of life.

 

Hope for a speedy recovery.

I really, really, really want to believe this is true.  But . . .   And this is regular ole flu?  Hmmm. I guess it attacks some people like that. And if they're fit enough, they can ignore the symptoms. I think that is how Jack Lallane finally died. So healthy he didn't realize he had pneumonia.

For Thailand's image, it doesn't matter. This is another body blow.  I looked at the DM comments for that story. People have already made the leap: "China Flu. Deadly. Thailand. Tourist. Don't go there." This might even scare off the Indians. 

He sold his house to go travelling, his parents have a holiday home in Spain as well as their own home, so not exactly hard up are they? so why the need for funding by others..........

'Confirmed' is only confirmed if there is no report stating otherwise in the next few days.

That his parents use crowd funding to pay for their visit in Thailand...

So the UK gent does not (doctors confirm) have the coronavirus and Thanathorn found not guilty both on the same day.

 

Some on here will be so disappointed.

He was already in hospital, one week after he left England, with well developed, severe symptoms, 4 days before the WHO was informed that a cluster of unidentified flu cases, centred on Wuhan, had been discovered.

 

Do you think he picked up Coronavirus in Thornton, on his way to the airport?

 

Or maybe at the "China Lodge" takeaway in Rossendale Ave, the night before he left?

A doctor is a medical person, works in a hospital, wears a white coat.

So the diagnostic information for the new coronavirus is now well established? and well understood & applied (with lightning speed!) here in Thailand?

They did not say " regular flu" the said

" does not have the Chinese virus but a severe strain of flu. "

Thailand is a major medical tourism destination, I am sure they have a test and labs to carry out such test , and determine the type of flu.

  In isolated cases such the fellow you mentioned and others, I am sure misdiagnosis occur, but with the threat of the Coronavirus,  such well publicized case and the presence of the parents, I am sure the appropriate tests were done. 

I am glad it is not the CoronaVirus as we are planning to come to Thailand in the next few months, and such outbreak could change our plans. Scary stuff as it could easily be anyone of as. 

Let's hope the Coronavirus does not spread, and let's hope the unfortunate lad has a speedy and complete recovery,

So you know his parents and their circumstances personally? Or do you just make up judgemental <deleted> like that all the time? Your understanding and compassion for what must be a difficult time for this family overwhelmed me. 

This news seems to have delivered a  sever blow to the keyboard agents of gloom and doom !

Here in Isaan in our village there are currently a dozen people who have or are suffering an influenza that 30% have ended up in hospital with pneumonia. 4 are children and 1 of those had severe pneumonia.

If people do not take adequate care when suffering any influenza coupled with the current dirty atmosphere  it  can exacerbate outcomes for the worse.

Every year thousands around the world  die as a result of influenza and the percentage of them that was as a result of any  corona virus would be minimal.

As a result of the fear generated by announcements such as this new virus strain the public reaction is to seek earlier medical diagnosis which in turn lowers the overall death rate from all seasonal infections regardless of type.

So in that sense maybe the  gloom and doomers provide a public service  after all ! ????

It was a flying boat ????

I hope he recovers and it is none of my business about the Crowd Funding for his parents. Those that criticize it are most likely not to participate other than donating a load of "noise" to boost their own relevance.

If you would have read the OP you would have understood he was transferred by boat from Phi Phi to Phuket, and from Phuket by plane to Bangkok.

Influenza symptoms should never be ignored. That's why it kills so many. Being supposedly fit and healthy  is no antidote for ignorance especially for the elderly. 24 hours is time enough  to succumb.

I sincerely trust that Bumrangrad has him in isolation
