Can you say “desperate”? ????

alexth, i would say "foolish". you want to promote tourism or deter it. as it is the foreigners are not happy paying differential entry fee for the tourist sites.

Foreigners already pay "tourism fees" in the form of dual pricing.

  • The Thai govt certainly have a way of putting people off coming to Thailand...   A real head scratcher..

  • Can you say “desperate”? ????

thai tourism officials seem to have lost it. as it is there is a death of tourists; trying to milk the tourists more will drive them further away.

All it took was 6 years to completely destroy this countries economy and potential. Now they sit back with an unhappy population, more corruption, air pollution and even a coronavirus issue to fix.

They can tax tourists all they want. Fact is the basic is broken and only a complete reset can put things back on track. Sad for the normal Thai people, who are just trying to survive.

I live in Cambodia and I used to visit Thailand 5 or 6 times a year, now I just can't be bothered and only visit when I'm flying through.

Cheaper for me to fly to Malaysia, the cost of hotels, transport, Food and shopping are a lot cheaper.

Now if You try to visit 5-6 times per year you will be denied as they will say you are working here or do not have sufficient funds to support yourself.

I bet the Chinese won't have to pay.

I'm guessing 99.9% of people all around the world don't fly out of their countries to "visit" another country 6 times a year.

Congratulations.  You're obviously in the Super Rich Jet Set economic bracket.

Or Cambodia is still a hardscrabble, lesser developed country than Thailand and doesn't have what you desperately want requiring you to spend your time and savings to obtain here in Thailand?

Just a casual observation.

this would be the gravestone of tourism in Thailand...Good luck with it...

Maybe that's their intention?

New low, I mean high...Thai 20B. Falang 200B. Supanburi zoo.

Strange enough, I only had to pay 20, and I do not look Thai.

Yes indeed - they are going bonkers in Bangkok!

You need to see the context:

Chinese are exempted from visa fees. Given the millions of Chinese don't paying visa fees (expected 40million...)  there is a huge loss.

So we will pay tourism tax to compensate for the free of charge visiting Chinese!

Lovely, I am always happy to support garbage Chinese!

I am sure after Chinese will protest and threaten to stay completely away, they will be exempted from tourism tax !

Ha Ha that’s so funny have they forgotten that tourists already pay higher rates for visiting tourist attractions an example would be the huge increase last year of visiting national parks or the huge hike in government hospital charges all these crazy ideas drive tourists away to the likes of Malaysia,Vietnam,Burma, Cambodia.

Just working out ways to compensate for lak of tourists at current moment ,this is all never ending in fees costing extra money while getting less for your money from exchange rate week in week out

Something tells me this is just the start of many fees to be added.. you can bet your bottom $$$$ here will be some form of "Coronavirus, help save the tourism industry" fee

fair enuf but i hope the thais know their are other countries that want tourists too. viet?  phil?

Good Lord. They are not even trying to hide the corruption anymore. Like those funds won't end up in the pockets of the ministers in charge. Clown world, indeed.

This is not an incentive to Visit Thailand by increasing taxes when you get here

TAT must think : Vietnam,Malaysia even Philippines are more welcoming and d cheaper

If you want more tourists -TAT must encourage tourists

Not drive them away !

way things are going there wont be any tourists to collect from

So glad to be leaving Thailand soon, indeed the whole of SE Asia. A region full of corrupt governments completely lacking in any democracy (yes I include Malaysia, Singapore in that).

Thailand is the epitome of greed.

Thai people don't care two hoots about you (your Thai wife cares more about her cellphone than you).

Get out while you can. There are much better places in the world to be. Thailand is dangerous. Thailand has bad air. Thailand has had it's day for westerners - it's all about Chinese and Indians from now. You are not welcome, and in truth, have not been since 2002.

I think, they should introduce this an "excitement" or "risk" tax.

As Thailand offer high risks of e.g.:

Dying in traffic
Destroying your lungs
Catching an STD or Coronavirus
Getting scammed or beaten by a ladyboy or taxi driver

Being financially ruined by hospital bills
Being jailed for feeding some fish or kidnapped and blackmailed by the police
Being shot while shopping

Becoming sick from eating bad street food

Being killed by some Burmese on an island
Being involved in a zip-line or parachute accidents

They could maybe promote this as a kind of Action Adventure Holiday destination Hub. Kind of like reaching the top of Mount Everest. Maybe they could even give out diplomas at the airport, for those who survive.

Certainly this could be big business.

Look at Anutin's little outburst. The government hates western tourists. They don't want them here at all - they're going to make it as hard as possible to get any visa except visa exemption for holidaying farangs. A lot of comments on here saying how dumb it is to introduce this fee, but once the fee's in place, they can ramp it up whenever they want and not apply it to the Chinese to keep those pesky farangs out of the country.

is it not worth some extra fees to visit the #2 hub of corona virus outside china??   not to mention hub of pm 2.5
