Killer of Dutch expat arrested after 13 years on the run - he conspired with Thai wife/brother to get their hands on 100 million baht

A former municipal councillor has admitted to murdering a wealthy man from the Netherlands in 2003. He had been on the run ever since after being granted bail then sentenced to death in absentia by the Pattaya court.

He conspired with the victim's Thai wife with whom he had started a secret affair.

Finding out that the Dutch man had 100 million baht in assets he conspired with the foreigner's wife and her elder brother to murder him. Jules Odekerken was bludgeoned to death with clubs then after coming round was finished off with a rock. He was then dumped in a soi in Chonburi.

Mr Odekerken, then 49, was the well known owner of "Quick News" (in Pattaya) reported Siam Rath. Elsewhere Thai media reported that he owned other media outlets in the resort and in Phuket.

He was murdered on 16th November 2003.

Siam Rath reported that Jules married Marisa Promma, 37, whom he met in Pattaya and the couple later had two children.

They hired former municipal councillor of Lang Suan, Chumphon, named Anupong Suthanee, now 54, who was also a building contractor, to build them a house.

Anupong started a sexual affair with Marisa then the pair conspired together to murder Jules hoping to get his large inheritance. Her elder brother Seksan Phromma was also in on the plot.

In 2003 Anupong and Seksan caught Jules alone and beat him with a club then strangled him with rope. They believed he was dead but he came round and begged for help as they were transporting the body. He was finished off with rocks then dumped in Soi Greenway in Muang district of Chonburi.

Anupong was granted bail and repeatedly failed to turn up in court resulting him in being sentenced to death in absentia in 2007 and a warrant being issued by the Pattaya court for his arrest.

He has now been arrested by the Crime Suppression Division in Phrae in northern Thailand.

He has reportedly admitted to what he did and had hoped that the statute of limitations would run out meaning he would not have to face justice.

Other media in Thailand reported that both Marisa and brother Seksan are serving life imprisonment for the murder.

The CSD's Pol Maj-Gen Jiraphop Phuridech and a large contingent of police announced the arrest yesterday as the murderer was taken to Pattaya.

He's sentenced to death so just get it done.

13 years is a very long time to be on the run, but hopefully Mr. Odekerkens family will be happy to hear that his murderer has finally been caught and is facing justice at last.

We would hope the 100 mil went to both the children. So I wonder where he met this upstanding trustable wife in Pattaya?

They should use those fancy smart-cars on the real criminals

Even stranger when you know that a few policemen in Kalasin received bail AFTER being sentenced to death.

When it comes to applying the law in this country, nothing is ' unbelievable' and money can buy everyone and everything, well, almost...

Think your right I was sure sold a dog when I first came to this tranquil serene land thats for sure ????

I'd like to see some live video while these police guys are pixelating the perp's head.  Victim beaten, strangled, finished off with a rock...  Animals wouldn't do that.  TIT.

why they hide his face, wonder why the police does that. Are they afraid we may recognize him?

13 year on the run? he, as municipal councilor, must have had good connections, the other possible reason is Thai police poor/bad performance

And of the 2 children.

Saw the tail end of this on the news, asked the "ole lady" who he killed and she just sort of blew it off......yikes. I just recently retired and told bits and pieces of what she's got coming later on......yikes again.

Another farang married to a quality prostitute.

When they finally brought the wife to trial 6 or 7 years ago it came out that the victims Dutch family had been relentlessly pressuring the Dutch Government to pressure Thailand.  As I recall, a couple of trade deals with the Netherlands which were important to Thailand were stalled and forced Thailand to bring the case through.

This case always amazed me because here was a Thai girl who had truly hit the jackpot. At the time of the murder, they were the wealthiest Expat/Thai couple in Chonbury.  She literally had everything every girl in Pattaya dreams of but it just wasn't enough.

This case should be required reading for any expat that thinks his TGF will love him forever if he just builds her a house and buys her a car.

Won't work on Thais, only farang overstayers.

He was initially granted bail because he put up the 100 million baht as collateral.

That says it all about justice Thailand, and why the perpetrators are able to manipulate the delay

Should never be a statute of limitation on the crime of murder - either that or is it is paused until you return
