PHUKET:-- The driver of the airport taxi that wiped out six cars and a motorbike, killing its rider, in peak hour traffic in Thalang 15 months ago has been released on a suspended sentence and will face a three-month ban from driving his taxi, officials have confirmed.

Marut Puangbanjong was found guilty of two charges against him in a verdict handed down on Nov 12 last year – a year and two weeks after the accident.

Marut was found guilty of one charge of negligence causing death under the Criminal Code, and another charge of reckless operation of a vehicle causing death levied under the Traffic Act.

I bet the situation would have been a whole lot different and a whole lot more expensive if the driver had been a farang though.

"All throughout the investigation, Capt Suporn, who was transferred to Sakoo Police Station near Phuket International Airport on Aug 1 last year, repeatedly gave Marut’s family name as Puangsombat.

On finally confirming Marut’s correct family name, in October last year, Capt Suporn told The Phuket News, “I am sorry. I confused the wrong family name with another case.” (See story here.)

Without being provided correct family name, the Phuket Provincial Court and the Phuket Public Prosecutor’s Office both denied any knowledge of the case."

"All throughout the police investigation and the trial Marut was allowed to continue working as a taxi driver, picking up and dropping off tourists at Phuket International Airport."

"In total, Marut spent 28 days behind bars."

The whole thing reads like a twisted comedy from some inter-dimensional circus.

a FULL report on a local paper, its interesting ? (well a ******* joke realy) 4 years, 2 years then a suspended, they got the name wrong, the guy in charge moved, no one knew about it, took over one year to come to court. oh, now he hasnt shown up.

they continue to outdo themselves.  i always share these stories with any friends who contemplate visiting thailand.

Absolutely pathetic.............And yet we still have meetings and seminars to address the deplorable road carnage while all the time the obvious is staring them in the face.

Everything about the apathy towards enforcement of existing road regulations to penalties for those who have an accident while breaking them do nothing more than enable the continued flouting of regulations and contribute to the death toll on Thailands roads.

It an absolutely abhorrent attitude from everyone in any position who could effect meaningful change.

Unless your a farang there is no justice here????

Sweet F, A.

Wipe out half a dozen vehicles, kill someone then receive a suspended sentence, pick mushrooms and get 15 years with 500k THB Bail!!

The disparity between prison sentences here is just unbelievable!!!

As some posters have mentioned, had it been a foreigner, it would be a whole different case for example:

I Spent 6 Months In A Thai Prison For Shoplifting

Thailand's king has pardoned a Swiss man who was sentenced to 10 years in jail for defacing images of him

Thai court sentences Dutch national to 103 years in jail

Compared to

Thai former abbot was yesterday (19/02/20) sentenced by the Central Criminal Court to a suspended jail term of 36 months and fined 27,000 baht for the embezzlement of 69.7 million baht of temple funds.

Just my thoughts.......

The only justice here is miscarriage of justice.

“I want him to explain what happened and check his attitude about driving in a public place. If I am not satisfied that he has the right attitude, his suspension may be extended,” Mr Prapai said".

Plus, he's got a 3-year suspended sentence and a B200,000 good behaviour bond.

If he does, if he does anything, he'll do the three years and forfeit the B200,000 bond that's hanging over his head

Yet one wrong word and 15 years in the house of the monkeys

I've not lived in all the countries of the world (obviously) but there can't be many as rotten to the core as this one.

I hope he does "something" then he can serve the sentence he

should have done, then justice will be served.
