Photo: Eakkapop Thongtub PHUKET: Faulty breaks are to blame for a heavy accident that occurred earlier today (Feb 22) in Kata where a truck crashed into a Minimart store. stevenl Posted February 22, 2020 Posted February 22, 2020 Never knew that was called Patong Road. Very dangerous intersection that, many times minibuses and unloaded trucks sliding back while trying to go up a slippery hill, coming down the hill people have right of way which is all too often ignored, etc. 1
Popular Post damascase Posted February 22, 2020 Popular Post Posted February 22, 2020 Break failure - did the driver fail to take a timely break or did the brakes not work? 4 1 2
Somtamnication Posted February 23, 2020 Posted February 23, 2020 The amount of farangs riding their first bike ever, trying to go UP that hill. A sight to behold.
RichardColeman Posted February 23, 2020 Posted February 23, 2020 Looks more like it was pulled down by excess wire ! 1

I'd assume the driver failed to have a break on time, so being very hungry he went for the drive-in option to buy some food. 3

Popular Post nausea Posted February 23, 2020 Popular Post Posted February 23, 2020 Another guy using only his brakes, and not gears, to descend a steep hill, I'd guess. 4

Popular Post bluesofa Posted February 23, 2020 Popular Post Posted February 23, 2020 Being bored, I read the original Phuket News report. I had assumed 'break failure' headline was a play on words. However, i see the text has the spelling 'break' a second time, so is it a lack of English by the journalist? Interestingly, I'm not sure how to interpret this: “Two staff from the Minimart were stuck inside the shop after the truck hit but, thankfully, they are not injured,” said Capt Kittipong. “I can confirm no tourists were involved,” he added." Does it mean the police were relieved no tourists were involved, or were they confirming there weren't any available to use as a scapegoat? 2 2

Popular Post Phuketshrew Posted February 23, 2020 Popular Post Posted February 23, 2020 Break failure? Is that the English translation of "Lap Nai"? 1 2

Old Croc Posted February 23, 2020 Posted February 23, 2020 For those from elsewhere, unfamiliar with Phuket, but still like to comment about every incident here, this is a pic of that intersection. The hill is very steep and very dangerous. I don't know why anyone would want a own a shop at the bottom or why anyone in their right mind would shop there. There have been many similar accidents. Years ago a truck veered to the left to avoid crashing at the bottom, and demolished a wall to that resort. The new, blue feature is where they repaired it. 1 1

apophyss Posted February 23, 2020 Posted February 23, 2020 Break failure or brain failure ? (if nobody check breaks before failure, will have failure one day...) 1
Damrongsak Posted February 23, 2020 Posted February 23, 2020 Why didn't he just run into the crash barrier instead of the store?

steelepulse Posted February 24, 2020 Posted February 24, 2020 Very slippery tarmac there. Some sort of rough surface would be a lot better. Once first rains hit, you can just sit and watch all the motorbikes go down as well as cars with bald tires not make it up that section. 1

AdamTheFarang Posted February 24, 2020 Posted February 24, 2020 I have driven down that hill many times on my scooter and you have to slow down to look left and right, no chances risking it there even if you have right of way. He could have taken out a Scooter and many people on the pavement, for example if Visa runners were being collected which they are at around dawn (if any are still going) or pinned them under part of the truck and crippled them for life. A few hours later and there are people walking back from the shops to Kata Noi, which has some of the most exclusive resorts in area. This is a major tourist area, the tourists must have seen the truck there and many thought this could have been the end of their life. 1
