How can i make a cheap carport

Featured Replies

Hi, i live at Chaiyaphum, i have a short budget. Could give me any ideas or advice to build a cheap carport ? Thanks ????

Steel posts are relatively cheap.

Sink them in a hole with concrete.

Weld the metal cross braces.

You can also buy some correlated roofing panels cheap.

We just built a 24' by 14' in Isaan about 80 miles from Chayaphum in Dec. 2019

Cost about < 8,000 baht, however my brother in law did all the welding and assembly with his friends.

The canvas top/tents you see everywhere are pretty cheap, easy, last years and you can move them if need be.

Get Charlie to build it, he's cheap, they call him Cheap Charlie!

The cheapest option would be to use eucalyptus for the posts, and green or black visor net for the roof.

Not the most attractive option, but affective against the sun at least, and the whole job shouldn't cost more than 2000bht.

I just saw a thai guy on youtube building one.

Materials that he is using are easy to get in Thailand and are cheap. 6 meters (20 foot) of that steel tubing he is using costs about 300 baht and is available in every village. Of course you would need welding machine and weld it. Don't know what are your possibilities... . Metal sheet on the top is cheap too, like a 100 baht per sheet.

Take into account when the storms come building a cheap one might just end up costing you more when it gets blown down on top of your car

Even cheap will stand up if it's done properly.

Full respect from me if you can build that in half a day - unless it's a large family of competent helpers you had with you!  :-)

That is cheap, the carport at my GF's house was 30,000 baht. No BIL, though.

I built a shed with a seating area with BBQ, then built a carport as the evening sun was getting in my eyes, its still not complete but no rush eh.

I used 4 inch square x 2.5m concrete posts at 325b each, cement blocks at 5b each, 1 x 2 inch steel for the roof at 220b per 4m length & cement roof tiles at 60b each. All delivered from local cement shops.

Biggest expense was the Cpac ready mixed concrete at 1700 a m2, used 4.5 m2 in total.

No idea of the exact full cost probably around 15-20k but it has kept me busy for a while & its a great place to sit and relax.

A couple of years ago I built a new cat house and you could do something similar, relatively inexpensive.

I used concrete pillars and bolted steel across the top to support the roof, no need for welding. Used self drilling screws to create the roof frame and attach the roofing sheets.

You need to be careful with steel pillars as internal corrosion can be a major problem. Our car port has steel pillars but they have been fabricated from 4 inch C section welded together after being treated internally.
