Fair play, op, that's quite ballsy to a guy with a gun. You could have just used the old social distancing excuse and (politely) refused. However way you play it, even if you know the cop is bent, do it firmly but politely.

I am actually surprised that a Thai policeman would go this far.

Never been stopped and never been searched even though I have been seen by thousands of  times.

But regardless, I see no reason to resist. If they want to search you then let them do it.

Do this in the USA or UK and you get arrested brutally in a matter of moments.

This furphy has been doing the rounds for how long?

You are NOT obliged to carry your passport, a Thai driver's licence, paper copy of the passport, or images of the passport are adequate ID. That has been stated by the most senior cop in Bangkok. They may want you to produce your passport at their police station, but it's more likely they won't push it.

I've been stopped a few times on my scooter, my Thai DL was all I needed. Only stopped once in the car, again Thai DL and I'm on my way. Ten years, never been asked for my passport.

The passport is an extremely valuable document, without it one is helpless. The only officials here that get their hands on mine are Immigration.

The traffic police also never asked me to see my passport. My Thai driver license is good enough.

But I remember a couple of years ago some foreigners in a nightclub got into trouble for not carrying their passport.

I don't know what the law is but I know it does not make sense to argue with Thai cops about the law.

Personally I live in the same place since 20 years and I am pretty sure there are enough cops here who remember me and know that I am here forever. They don't give me a hard time.

What's your point, you achieved a pyrrhic victory over a small-time traffic policeman, and want to crow about it?

Do you think half of the wide-eyed foreigners here would have the same balls? Nah...555

Thanks for posting the experience!

I can't believe someone would post this publicly. Even more bizarre is you seem to be proud of it. Seems the Thai showed great restraint. You, on the other hand, acted like a --------- all while your child was in the car.

I also had a policeman try it on with me in Hua Hin. It didn't work out for them. I have bigger friends. I also saw them sharing the proceeds of when it did work out for them, in their police box.

Not sure why you are not carrying your passport during current situation - it has been suggested and would seem prudent.

Only fools and betas carry their passport on their person.

My Girlfriend was stopped at Wat Boon / Sukumvit  intersection at 6am this morning whilst delivering her farms  twice weekly fresh Vegetables to the Malaor market in soi Wat Boon ,, the market is open the traders need her produce , 8,000 bahts worth.

she has cut her deliveries from 4 times a week to twice a week over last 4 weeks   but seems  now the farms are not allowed to sell any in Pattaya ???

The idiot cops would not let her through other delivery drivers with fresh produce also getting turned back , they let he through last Wednesday ???

now the market traders are moaning they are short of stock ,, she did manage to flog most of it to another market at Ban Chang ,,

but the Cops are being a bit OTT ,, food deliveries are essential

Is this a new was to try escorting money?...

This is not a new way to extort money.

I saw quite often that Thais did not let a policeman search their car without carefully watching, and demanding to see the hands of the policeman, not only before the search, but all the time during the search.

And these were educated Thais, even government employees, they knew very well why they had to be careful.

From what you report here you had been doing the right thing, absolutely.

The ones which tell you otherwise will change their minds quickly, after they get accused of having drugs in their car, and offered to get away if they cough up a nice amount of cash. This has been happening and it is happening, and the Thais know it.

I'm afraid that with the economic crisis developing now it will happen more often.

Also no original passport, keep that in the safe, a picture and better a paper copy, preferably in color, is enough - but carry your DL.
