Its what gets implemented, passed in to law because of a "situation" but is never withdrawn after its over. That's the concern for many,.

In the USA they will most certainly be forced to scrap since many of the "emergency" measures directly contravene the US Constitution.

How many people have to die from a "new" threat, illness, mortality source, before it needs to be "addressed"?

What is the criteria for taking action?

Because of proactive management of road safety cars "only" kill about 4000 a year in the UK.

The latest viral threat (COVID) has killed more people in 2 months (in the UK) than road deaths in the UK would in 5 years.

Not enough?

Wait until 500,000 dead before taking action?

500,000 could be easily achieved in the UK......and in Thailand for that matter.

5 million?.......in Thailand?........including curmudgeonly, censorious, old, de-socialised, "bubble dwelling" expats?

Dr Neill Furguson has already been discredited by many other academics for 2001 foot and mouth handling. His figure of 500,000 deaths is also disputed by many and he refuses to say how he got to that figure. The generally accepted mortality rate for SARS CoV2 is 0.2% which would be around 132,000 deaths in the UK. The figures presented by ONS on Sunday had 91% of the deaths over 60 and 1% of deaths between 20 and 39 years old.

Neil Ferguson's figures are useless. In his report he gives a table that lists every permutation from 400 to 490000.

In reality Sweden had a virus that killed 0.02679 percent of its population. Japan had a virus that killed 0.000003865 of its population.

Some countries were unluckier. In the UK so far the virus killed 0.0420 percent of the population.

28520 people have died in the UK which is pretty bad, but nowhere near the 40 million global deaths Neil Ferguson had predicted.

If our governments overreacted supposed experts like Neil Ferguson with their biblical predictions caused this massive overreaction.

Yeah. Sure. When does that happen. At the next pandemic? You are not thinking about the damage currently inflicted by China on global economies. There's a price to pay for that.

I found this article quite interesting, I think Facebook bans are coming soon for anyone posting their view on the situation which differs from the offical narrative. I actually think freedom of speech is under threat in western countries, Chinese style censorship of social media is occuring all the time now.

Look at sweden death toll, there experiment has not been without cost compared to the other nordic countries, swedens death toll is over the top. They also started out trying that in England until they realized it would destroy the health system.

You are wrong. Flat out. There's no "new spin." Every country and not merely USA will make decisions about dangerous China supply chain versus local manufacture.

People posting on TV are such Amazing cynics. If nothing else, this has exposed the serious dangers of the China supply chain. Other countries so should take serious note.

But instead of destroying the health system, the lockdown will destroy 1000s of businesses. The threat of unemployment of a similar scale to the early 1930's is real, anywhere between 4 to 9 million workers have been put on furlough in the UK and business want it exended to September. The current level of unemployment in the UK is 1.5 million, during the early the 1980's unemployment peaked at 3 million in 1982.

All it's very well saying Sweden got it wrong, but their economy will survive a lot better.

I think we expats would have great problems returning to our respective countries as the costs of international flights will increase to stratospheric levels to the point that we could for the most part not return annually to our countries of origin if not to return permanently.

I agree. BBC, Facebook and YouTube have all pulled postings by David Icke who is one of the most outspoken, for want of a better word, conspirators.

I understand that this is because various Governments have directed or requested them to do so calling it "misinformation"

Now whether you agree with his views or not, and I'm NOT about to go into that here, the very act of Censorship especially if encouraged or directed by the State is, IMO the thin end of the wedge, leading to an Orwellian society. I don't know who first said "I disagree with your opinion, but I defend to the hilt your right to hold said opinion" but whoever it was, I agree.

We need to be careful.

Sweden's death toll is very moderate, 0.02 percent of the population does not seem 'over the top'.

England's death toll is actually considerably worse.

We are knew David Icke as a BBC sport presenter and then a nutter. Now he had 1 million followers on Facebook and YouTube, then banned for saying something different. You can see where this is going and it's not in a good direction.

Do not trust Facebook, Google, YouTube.  They are heavily censored. Any opposing views will be considered

"misinformation" and as such will be removed from our platforms. Zuckerburg stated as much before a US senate hearing.  google is simply a surveillance tool for the Govt.  Wake up people. Please.

Actually, no Google is not a surveillance tool for the govt. Google is a surveillance tool for industry.

All of the govt alphabets couldn't care less you exist. The threat to your privacy comes infinitely more from Google, FB, Amazon, Apple and any site that constantly runs algorithms on your browsing activity, buying habits, geolocation, picture taking, etc.

The ironic thing is that most people fear NSA/CIA/MI6/BND/GCHQ/etc., who are totally uninterested in you if you are not a terrorist or selling fissionable material, yet the same people freely give away every single aspect of their life to Google et al. The govt alphabets are under strict guidelines and have to jump through hoops to even begin to look at a domestic citizen, but there are absolutely no constraints on the Googles of the world. They can collect everything (remember you clicked "I Agree" when you downloaded some App?) and no one can stop them.

Yes, the technology exists to be unbelievably intrusive, and some nations are already using it, under the guise of "need to follow CV-19". None is a Western nation, but all have the capability.

Under the Obama Administration, a team was put together to address the very topic of an international pandemic. The team included a range of folks from many spheres, including healthcare, virology, epidemiology, defense, intel, and, inter alia, philosophy. Guess what they spent the majority of time on (after developing a pandemic response system that was subsequently discarded by the new Admin)?

Answer: Means to insure the continuation of democracy and the freedoms listed in the Bill of Rights. The team saw the possibility for some leaders to abuse controls that might be required in the event of a pandemic and set up procedures to obviate aggressive invasions of privacy.

The OP is correct in a large sense: this is never going to end....at least until there is a vaccine.  Then the next virus finds its way into the ecosystem and we do all of this again.

I've mentioned this in other threads, but the goal of sheltering and lockdowns is not to eradicate the virus. The virus is now a permanent part of the ecosystem. The goal of lockdowns was to slow the infection rate so as not to swamp the healthcare system. Pre CV-19 the US had 1 million hospital beds. At any given time 700,000 on average were occupied with folks suffering from a whole host of maladies.  If too many got CV-19 at the same time, not every sufferer could be given proper treatment, and some would unnecessarily die. It would also crowd out those suffering from other ailments.

Infection of the majority of the population is inevitable. Nothing short of a vaccine is going to stop that. The truly vulnerable are still going to die, if not now, then in the next wave.

There will be renewed outbreaks and clusters of infection, and that will bring about new lockdown measures. These will come and go either until there is a vaccine, or the remaining populace has built up antibodies to the current iteration of the virus. If the virus mutates too much, existing antibodies will be useless, and the whole thing begins again.

Time and experience will also show the most effective ways to treat sufferers, so lockdowns are buying time until the best treatment options are found and those become standard practice.

In new outbreaks, one goal will be to isolate the most vulnerable, such as the aged, obese, smokers, Type II diabetics, vapers, those with high BP, and those whose immune systems are already weakened by other ailments like HIV or cancer. Some unlucky folks who fall outside of any of those risk groups might get hit with a massive viral load and also die. Like it or not, that is our new world.

CV-19 is different from other coronaviruses like SARS and MERS because people evidencing no symptoms can pass it on. Because of that, CV-19 was never ringfenced like SARS and MERS were. CV-19 is everywhere, and it will continue to exist regardless of any lockdown measures. One bit of luck is that it doesn't fare as well in conditions of high heat, high humidity, and strong sunlight. That grants SEAsia a benefit, as well as the Northern Hemisphere summer. In the Autumn, all virologists and epidemiologists believe it will return.

We should know this and prepare accordingly. Think of what you might have done differently if you knew beforehand a month or more of lockdown was coming. Get that ready for next time, because there will be a next time.
