(Reuters) - Bail for the white former Minneapolis police officer charged with murdering African American George Floyd, whose death ignited two weeks of protests, was raised by $250,000 to $1.25 million at a hearing on Monday.

Former officer Derek Chauvin, 44, has been charged with second- and third-degree murder and manslaughter in Floyd's May 25 death in Minneapolis by kneeling on his neck for nearly nine minutes.

Chauvin made his first court appearance by video link. He was handcuffed in an orange jumpsuit and sitting at a small table, the Minnesota-based Star Tribune said after the hearing. Access was limited to a small group of reporters.

Minnesota Assistant Attorney General Matthew Frank argued that the "severity of the charges" as well as the strength of public opinion against Chauvin made it more likely that Chauvin would flee if set free, the Star Tribune reported.

Chauvin's bail was raised to $1.25 million from $1 million without conditions, and to $1 million from $750,000 with conditions, according to a conditional release order signed by Hennepin County District Judge Jeannice Reding.

The conditions include prohibitions against working in law enforcement and contact with Floyd's family. Chauvin would also have to surrender any licenses or permits for firearms to qualify for the lower bail amount, the order said.

Chauvin and his attorney did not object to the bail conditions, the Star Tribune reported.

Floyd's death has triggered the largest nationwide protests in decades as demonstrators call for policing reforms and policies to address racism and inequalities in society.

He hasnt been found guilty yet , needs to go to Court first to get a judgement , thats how it works

How it actually works he goes to court for a bail hearing and is/is not given bail privileges.

It is not unreasonable, given the nature of the charges and the public sentiment, to expect him to be held pending trial.

I rather hope the prosecution challenge the bail and that he is held until his trial.

He would only be refused bail if they think he may commit another crime , he would interfere with the court proceedings or he would flee .

If the Court is satisfied he would not do any of the above , he would be given bail

Being behind bars where blacks are over-represented, or being released on bail with current situation and public coverage. Choices, choices.

Got to think the authorities would just as soon see the policeman die while in custody waiting for trail. A lot would be solved by his death at the hands of inmates or self inflicted like Epstein.

I just wonder if their would have been any voice heard, if the criminal arrested would have been white ?

I thought it would have been more convenient (from the administration's point of view) if he was found out and lynched by protestors/rioters/whatever. Dying while in custody would raise another excrement storm.

Why is he allowed any bail at all? There is a video for the world to see where he murders the black man. NO BAIL.

You could almost think it was Thailand...no bail, that's it!!!

I would suggest in that case, the police officer wouldn't have kneeled on the arrested person's neck for nine minutes and ignored the can't breathe pleas.

i'm sure Trump would agree with your realistic solution - if he completely lost his sanity.

It just shows you, how sick their juristical system is. He is being charged with:

  • second-degree murder
  • third-degree murder
  • manslaughter

To top it off, bail is set at an impossible. Well, if they would speed up matters a little more then bail would be off the cards. If he would have that money, he most likely would not be a cop killing people (irrelevant which degree) ........

What a terrible story which, poured so much fuel on a country where racism officially does not exist but unofficially is on the rise. Like religion, racism is educational; nobody is born a racist!

If he wants to, I think there will be many financially able defenders willing to put up the bail.

I must say the English here is a bit confusing. Are you proposing killing all black criminals?

The real surprise is the bail amount of $1.25M has NO CONDITIONS.

There is also a bail order for $1.0M which has the usual bail conditions.

So, now defendant has two bail choices in this case, the original release order of $1M and a new amended release order in the higher amount.
