Thailand Plans Open Borders for High-Spenders on Private Planes

Thailand’s plan to target high-spending foreigners to kick-start its travel sector has a green light after winning Cabinet approval and additional support from the nation’s aviation regulator.

The Southeast Asian nation lifted on July 1 a near-total ban on foreign travelers. The majority of arrivals in the initial phase will be foreigners with direct ties to Thailand -- such as those with businesses, major investments or family in the country. The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand added a clause to also allow those who have “special arrangements” with the government.

“Many in the high-spending, high-income groups avoided direct impact from the pandemic, but couldn’t come here because of travel restrictions,” Chula Sukmanop, director general of the CAAT, said in an interview Tuesday. “I’ve spoken with private aircraft operators who said they have plenty of potential customers looking to charter a plane to here.”

Great News. How about waving the need for unobtanium like

the mooted "No risk of contracting covid-19" certificates?

Rich people are blessed by special magic not available to common folk which protects them from infections. Or does avoided direct impact mean: were insulated from economic consequences like the rest of you?

Have they even begun to think this through? This would likely bring a mere handful to a country that needs millions to restore anything like normality to the travel sector. Thailand has been very fortunate with Covid and to let anyone in who has a few bucks more than average early seems like asking for trouble.

Even if 100% of the big spenders who came here before the <deleed> hit, will that restore the lost jobs of the common people?

If I borrowed the Iron Man suit and flew in would I be treated as a rich Hi-So, if so I will go to the mall and buy one, then act like I just landed at the airport, albeit outside of the terminal area....

In there minds, 1 Hi-roller will spend what thousands of tourists would spend, but then only a few would be on the money receiving end.  You get what  you pay for or vice versa.

Right now is the time for anyone already in Thailand to take advantage of incredible deals on hotel rooms. I got 80% off at the place I stay at here in Bangkok.

In their underdeveloped heads this is the scenario:

- millionaire comes with airplane

- millionaire mates with Thai women (many, since millionaires are covid immune PLUS they have more powerful semen)

- in few years a new wealthy society of rich Thai newborn is created. Thailand has become the new MonteCarlo. Streets are now useless since just heliports and airports are needed.

The times of the dirty poor farang are long gone! Finally this is what Thailand truly deserves!

Booked an all inclusive week stay in Phuket at Cape Panwa for 40% of what I normally pay, all meals included, as well as a few drinks and spa treatment.  Never have to leave the resort, and it is on the beach.

Damnit I knew one day that Pigs would fly, just never thought I would see the day, but then I never thought Covid would decimate the worlds thinking and reasoning process either.

No ! they haven't

Good news i can ready "Old boy Biggles" and my cessna from Halfpenny Green airport near Dudley it will only take a week to get here

Unfortunately, the OP article never actually explains how the government intends to apply the exception for chartered private planes...

Do they mean some rich solo family coming in on their chartered Gulfstream? Or, do they mean private chartered Airbus or Boeing jets bringing in hordes of Russian and Chinese tourists packed to the gills in economy class?

It is not magic. Many silicon valley tech execs fled to yachts, islands, and homes in Jackson Hole, Barbados, New Zealand, and elsewhere.  Well reported. On the other side of the spectrum when you are 12 Mexicans in a house in Sunnyvale you can't, struggling to eat and pay rent.

Other high profile people like Tom Hanks and Boris kept working and meeting people. Social distancing is privilege.

A great time for the private jet set to visit Thailand. Sparse crowds, no tours busses or hordes of shoppers. They are not talking about charter flights of Ukrainian tourists. The passengers will no doubt be prescreened for covid-19, have certificates on entry, and other requirements.

International Flight plans and landing permits must be arranged in advance. This is normal ops for private jet operators.Providing some health forms just another detail that can be easily arranged.

NY as one example where the rich got out to their holidays homes or yachts, no lock down for them, no singing we're all in this together. There again countless politicians were caught doing the same thing.

Do the ill informed that wish for vaccines really imagine the wealthy or their families will be getting jabbed? Like Obama allowing GM foods for the masses as his family ate organic. Different laws for different classes.
