Alcohol ban in Thailand on Sunday and Monday

Thailand’s Department of Disease Control has confirmed the nationwide alcohol ban on Sunday (5 July ) and Monday (6 July).

The ban on the sale of alcohol is in place due to two Buddhist holidays: Asahna Bucha Day and the beginning  of Buddhist Lent.

The holidays fall on this weekend and as a result the Thai government has declared Monday as a national holiday.

During the ban, no alcohol can be sold anywhere, including in bars, restaurants and hotels or at supermarkets or convenience stores.

Anyone caught ignoring the alcohol ban faces a fine or up to 10,000 baht, 6 months in prison or both.

The ban comes just days after Thailand lifted restrictions on bars and restaurants serving alcohol, which had originally been put in place to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Confused posters who have no proper calendar and some news thread with misleading info from an official.

I gave up to argue against the "4th/5th" error.

Every proper calendar shows holidays on 5 and 6.

Be prepared for crowds at the liquor stores/departments today.

Avoid it!

as if the bar and restaurant owners haven't suffered enough.!!!!!!

Just as you can have a drink again after 3 months prohibitions, they close alcohol sales again. and I believe there will be 2 or 3 more alcohol free days again later this month.

Sad enough to walk around and see the bars empty with no customers at all.

I just don't see any benefit; the people who want to drink will just stock up and the only ones suffering, will be the business owners again on top of what they just went through the last couple of months.

but there we go - this is Thailand !

Well at least nobody should drown in a puddle for those 2 days.

The 27th being the holiday in leiu of Songkran will give the Thais a 4 day holiday ie: 25/28th.

These days are not alcohol free days so bars will be open as normal.

The carnage on the road should get back to normal I would think

All those of you who enjoy a drink - you have my sympathy. Here in Siem Reap, alcohol always available - no "off" days!!

Its a Buddhist country people are not out on the streets moaning about it. The only ones I ever hear complaining about it are expats. Seems that the Thais don't really care about it / accept it.

Oddly enough, yes it is their country.

A little research, if you didn't know already, would have informed you the country is around 95% Buddhist, should not be such a surprise. Just what did you expect?

For God's Sake make your bloody mind up!!!!!!

it was Saturday and Sunday a few days ago has the moon cycle changed or "divine alteration"

No sympathy needed alcohol always available if you know where to go, plus not everyone who lives in Thailand is a bar fly.

Why are you drinking beer out of water glasses?

I mean it would be illegal if the glasses were advertising beer, even though there is beer in them.

No further comment on ridiculousness..................

Is today a Buddha day or not?

I hear both yes it is and no it isn't.

Are the bars closed today and Sunday or Sunday and Monday?

Interesting, so google has got it wrong?

The day is known as both Asanha Bucha and Asanha Bucha according to what I've read.

From a google search for "Asanha Bucha"

image.png.73c5a353807a46664eb0f999c1b5ac65.png

I've seen all sorts reported about this weekend.

The WikiPedia article reports it as being on the 5th.

As far as I was concerned Asanha Bucha is today as reported by google and others and the actual work day off is carried forward to Monday and the Lent day is Sunday with its day off carried forward to Tuesday on account of them falling on the weekend.

I think any confusion was introduced by google which many people rely on.

Is alcohol drinking now regarded as a disease in Thailand?

(Pecksniffs can save their energy, by not replying,  as I already know what you will write).
