Why are people staying in Thailand when then can't meet TI's financial requirements?

There is a very active thread about a busted agent where some people are trading insults which lead me to reflect on people's motivation to stay in LOS: if you can't afford a legit visa you can afford bar girls either, so why do you stay here?

Anecdotally, in many instances, the people involved do have the funds in their home country, but due to exchange rate losses, or funds being locked into long term investments, they  do not wish to transfer money to a Thai bank if they can avoid it. Also, if you are very much a temporary resident in Thailand and you don't plan or wish to commit yourself past 12 moths or so, you may go down that route. As I say, anecdotally.

Because in Thailand they are 'more Hansum" than in the west.

I know several people who make enough to live, but do not meet the monthly income requirements and do not have enough money to put 400/800k in a bank account.

  • Popular Post

Some are choosing to use the visa money on bar girls instead .

Not a good option but the temptation is strong ????

Maybe the temples (They are entry free) or the food (Street food is relatively cheap)

or the beaches for the ones on the seaside

It seems the OP has a few things on "his" mind, money, bar girls and being nosey...:coffee1:

OP it is indeed a truly reprehensible practice, with the goodwill shown by many on TVF it will soon be history.

I have never understood OP question either.

The requirement is not in reality that cumbersome.  If monthly income is not enough go back home work a year or whatever it takes to save the lump sum, transfer to Thai bank and forget about it.  Seems a lot more simple than trying to figure ways around it every year.

But what do I know?

800,000 / 12 months = 66,666THB per month.

I think we can all agree that it's possible to spend a lot less than that and still live comfortable.

Because even those with income or savings have had enough of copy this, copy that..picture this, picture that, wrong colour shirt, bank letter 2 minutes too old and numerous other things immigration throw at them....

Thais also enjoy a 30 baht public healthcare scheme that does not extend to foreigners, and with 9k per month good luck to pay your hospital bill if, say, you suffer a broken leg or worse...

Thais living on 9k per month share a room with multiple family members, or co-workers, with no aircon, no hot water, and a communal bathroom.

They eat things that many foreigners simply can't.

Finally, they are happy because they have always been used to go along with the minimum, or less, and are much more insouciant than Westerners.

My social security card entitles me to cheap healthcare at my registered government hospital apparently, not sure  if thats part of the Bt.30.00 scheme or not because I prefer the pretty nurses at Pattaya Bangkok hospital that my employer provided private health insurance pay's for !!

As for myself . . .

I'm unwilling to put 25K USD (approx) and just let it sit there.  I have little faith in Thai banks.  It's probably easy enough to put the money in but to take that out of the county at some point I would not be so sure about and I'm not even going to try to find out.

It does not cost me 65K baht to live here so why in the world would I want to bring that much in every month.  I live quite well for far less than that IMO.

For me it's an easy decision to pay an agent $600 USD and it's done and dusted for the year.

I can get a wine cooler from my local mom and pop shop for 37 Baht , or I can get a large Chang for 50 Baht in my local bar, served by a pretty in a Chang uniform and I pay my girlfriend 10 000 Baht a month to pretend to be my wife and I get 50 cent beers when I go to Cambodia and rent for 500 Baht a night and when I have a accident, I go to a government hospital and get everything done for 30 Baht

If your alternative is going back to say the UK and sleeping in cardboard box on the street or a 8ft square room up north somewhere, then a condo near the beach seems quite appealing

Nah, he's paying way too much for the wine cooler.

32bht in the nearest shop, 28bht up the road a bit.

I always take a couple of bottles along to the local short-time hotel, as the drinks in the fridge are way too expensive.

Arctic room earlier today ......... 240bht for 2hrs.

Mate, you think to damned much, Just enjoy Phuket and leave others to enjoy their lives wherever and however they are. As a matter of fact, the illegal "Agent" and her husband were using illegal stamps, papers and he was cultivating cannabis.

It's Ok if some want to get by cheap living in Thailand. However, they must be able to afford the money in the bank or monthly transfers to get a legitimate extension/visa. Those that can't are simply trying to take advantage of Thai generosity. They expect the government and Thai people to come to their rescue. Thailand isn't a nanny state and needs to assist Thais not falongs living on the cheap. Because one's pension ia too small isn't Thailand doing, complain to your government.

Most Thais, well off or poor, look down at cheap charlies. They don't understand how these people degrade themselves.

I'm not for throwing away money to impress others and I know the value of things and services, but I'm never cheap. Some cheap charlies even recount their change to be sure the seller didn't short them one baht, but wouldn't return the one baht if overpaid. Shameful!

If you really need a couple of baht, sit on the street with a tin cup and I'll drop in my spare change.

I couldn't afford bar girls after my divorce, but I still wanted to live in LOS till I died. I can't afford women back home either so that doesn't come into it, but my lifestyle in LOS was waaaaaay better than here. I only left because I could not afford 75,000 baht for medical insurance as well as a non O.
