Thailand ready to open border for Cambodian migrant workers

Thai authorities have prepared to welcome back migrant workers from Cambodia as Thailand is moving into phase 7 of its Covid-19 lockdown easing, the Pattaya Mail has reported. Under the next phase of reopening, migrant workers from Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos will be allowed to enter Thailand to work under disease control regulations.

 

At Aranyaprathet border crossing in Sa Kaeo province, health officials, immigration police and customs officers have coordinated their efforts to enforce regulations including 14-day quarantine, health certificate verification and contact tracing procedure. The implementation of Phase 7 of reopening will also allow border markets to resume operations after the lockdown has been imposed since March.

Supposedly many Thais are out of work. Pay a decent wage with decent conditions and put those folks to work. Bringing in easily controlled migrants to undercut wages does not benefit Thai people in general. Sorry for stating the obvious

These days many Thais, certainly not all, have a poor work ethic and refuse to do work they feel is beneath them such as fishing and construction. I have seen a number of young men go to Bangkok from Isaarn for work and be back up here inside a fortnight because they ' don't like it ' or there are ' too many rules '  or the Boss is ' too strict '

 

Many prefer to do nothing. I am amazed sometimes how they can not be bored out of their minds.

 

Cambodians reduce costs of working in Bangkok by sharing rooms with their relatives and siblings working at the same places, and are far more driven to work long hours and send money home to improve their personal conditions in their homeland.

 

Also, Cambodians, because they are away from family and home and usually live in close proximity to their workplace, they are less inclined to go out and socialize outside.

 

There are as you say, unscrupulous employers who target migrants for cheap labour because of their  lack of rights as migrant workers, and this has been going on forever and starts right up at the top in Thailand.

But how would a "Make Thailand Great Again" or "Thaiexit" approach to migrant workers benefit the country? It ultimately generates more problems than it solves.

 

They're going to come anyways. Might as well regulate and monitor them, similar to what the Arab Gulf countries are doing.

Over simplifying things to suit your personal narrative. What about the economy and all those unemployed and without any type of social funds to protect them?

That's not true.

 

In other Asian countries where Thais migrate to, Thais have a reputation for being hard, honest workers and are in high demand as construction and factory workers.

sorry for going off topic but a minimum wage job was advertised in the uk and there were thousands of applicants,don,t think people rea!ise the ending imp!ications of this pandemic which are going to go on for years.as for "benefiting the thai people"whwn has the thai government ever been bothered about that?

opening land borders for migrants is indeed a sign of positive movement but

I doubt many migrants will be moving over to work,  after paying 20,000++ baht for legal L-A visa, wp's and some going onto debt to do so, they wont be able to afford 14 days quarantine with no salary

There is a medical scheme for migrant workers, essentially lets them enrol under the "30 baht" scheme for a fee of about 12800 baht a year. Obviously no one expects them to have private health insurance or use private hospitals.

 

Yes, quarantine is envisioned and details are being worked out. Will not involve hotels. Either special (and very basic) facilities located right near the border and/or employer-provided quarters. There is debate going on between Thai govt and employers as to who will pay for this as obviously the workers cannot.

 

Since Cambodia is at least as COVID-free as Thailand, arguably more so,  the logic of quarantining Cambodian migrants on arrival  is debatable.

Minimum wage for Thai workers is 300 to 400 baht per day depending on the province.

It is the companies that want immigrant workers - cheaper labour.

It is not just the companies, there is a real shortage of workers in many parts of the country. Where I am, the migrants can get 500 baht a day .

 

7-11s, gas stations, all rely on migrants. So does anyone in need of household help. Simply can't find Thais to do it.
