See Fred110's post and photos.  Lots of trees and beautiful, clean beach.

It's not the trees or beach that detract from that side of the road, it's the unfortunate social underclass that populate it. Never has it been so obvious than in the last few months when they closed the beach and the doorways of the sbuttered businesses on the opposite side of the road became home to the same vagrants, druggies and prostitutes.

No amount of beautification will solve Pattaya's basic social problem.

That would be Thailand's basic problem, not just Pattaya's.

Something like 1% of Thailand's population holds something like over 50% of the wealth.

Seems every few years this project comes around with new city management. I remember years back when they took down all the coconut tress because of the danger to tourists, then a few years later they replanted coconut trees.....hmmmm. Gotta use up that budget or they won't get it next year!

Inequality reigns https://www.thebigchilli.com/feature-stories/thailands-six-pack-the-powerful-thai-chinese-families-who-dominate-the-countrys-business-scene
Citing the Credit Suisse Global Wealth Report 2018, a recent article on the Asia Times website calls Thailand’s economy the most unequal in the world. It reports that in 2018, 67% percent of the nation’s wealth was held by 1% of the population, a rapid increase from 58% in 2016. On May 7, 2019, Forbes website published a report titled ‘Thailand’s 50 Richest’ detailing the country’s wealthiest families and individuals. The list – headed by the Chearavanont family with a net worth of US$29.5 billion is presented annually, with rankings based on net worth. (For the record, the family of Worawit Weeraborwornpong, chairman of Siamgas & Petrochemicals PCL with net worth of US$590 million, is ranked 50th on Forbes’ Thailand list).

The top 50 families boast a staggering US$160.56 billion in net worth, about 4.86 trillion baht at current exchange rate. To put this in perspective, Thailand’s budget for fiscal year 2019 was three trillion baht. The original budget for 2020 was 3.2 trillion baht.

It's what they do. Fits right in with a marina that disintegrated, a big building in front of the lookout, the horrid walkway, the mythical monorail etc etc etc. If it's a really bad idea they'll do it.

I have seen the umbrella mafia and the jet ski mafia use them as bedposts for their hammocks. ????

They did the same thing on parts of Jomtien Beach and Dongtan Beach a few years ago, cut down all the beautiful big, old shade trees and replaced them with scrawny little palms that are useless on a hot day. I assume this is because the City's preferred "tree provider", Nong Nuch Garden, can grow mangy little palm trees quickly, while it would take decades to cultivate the big shade trees. It's such a shame and makes the City council look stupid, as if they're completely unaware that people strolling along the walkway appreciate shade.

They probably think people that actually walk are stupid.

They should have brought in the coconut picking monkeys if they really were concerned with cocnuts falling on tourists. Much cheaper, and it would have been an attraction for tourists. To cut down the broad leaf trees is criminal in my opinion. They will hold the beach and provide real shade and beauty.

The trees are a reminder of "old Pattaya" when it was fun. They have to go so there will be a new image of Pattaya to bring in the rich people.

That just goes to show Thailand is heading in the wrong direction.  Actually, it's probably heading towards a civil war, or revolution, in the decades to come.
