Younger protesters may lack understanding, warns psychologist

Youngsters being drawn into political activism by the explosion of Internet information may lack a deep understanding of the political situation, a prominent psychologist has warned.

Dusadee Juengsirakulwit, director of the Rajanagarindra Institute of Child Development, said the student-led movement could not be easily summed up but noted that protesters tended to be younger than before.

This was because they could access more information than in the past and analyse and react to it faster, she suggested.

Recent weeks have seen school students around the country protest in solidarity with the anti-government youth movement.

Dusadee also noted that among student activists, girls appear to outnumber boys.

Girls are more emotionally expressive than boys and so more tend to join activities that allow them to express themselves, she explained.

However, she was concerned that the thought process of many youngsters was not fully developed, meaning they could be easily pushed into following others.

Political matters are complex subjects and need to be clearly understood, she added. Students should be encouraged and supported to voice their opinions but also educated so they can think clearly and critically, she said.

Thailand has the Government, Police, Teachers, local politicians. and so on

it deserves.

The people need to change, not just the above, but i don't think they want to change.

maybe 150 years more to go. :coffee1:

Really, they are not. They are only 'complex' when corrupt folk with an agenda want to achieve something... such as complete suppression and control in the guise that we know what is good for you. These students are streets ahead of any army politician.

Good  to see Thanathorn pissing off the govt by mentioning the unmentionable.

By the look of things these students have gained that part of their education outside of the formal system and are demonstrating their understanding very clearly.

IMO there is no "MAY" about it, and that doesn't just apply to Thai kids.

And therefore, we must control the internet.

Gotta keep our kids safe.

Ah so wonder who funds her organisation.

Seems pretty fundamental that students want more freedoms and fully understand more democratic models than they currently experience.

It won't be long before "following others" turns into "foreign influence" they will definitely make this white mans fault somehow.

Also I wonder what they will regard as a solution re-education camps like China and internet censorship?

I think I can see where this is going.

IMHO, that at the moment they allow those mavericks "youngsters" to blow off steams and feel as they can change things, but there are those who watch very carefully not to let the situation to get out of hands and we all know all too well what will happen if they strat think that it has gone too far now...

It will be interesting to see where the student protests leads to.  Does the government still have the Attitude Adjustment camps?  Maybe the whole country can be an Attitude Adjustment camp.  ????

Fear the learning process if you cannot control it.  They are paying attention.  Something they might to do when a uniform wearing educator is trying to tell teach them about politics.

Ah, and where was this psychologist when a man was sectioned for having an opinion that he’d lost faith in something we can’t talk about?

Manipulated? Absolutely. But not by knowledge. Unfortunately, they’re manipulated by an intentional lack of it.

How complex is to understand that there are a bunch of unelected ex military generals taking the pi$$ out of the country through their mismanagement of the economy, their continuous "command and control" tactics and endemic corruption and who have a total disrespect of the people they are supposed to represent ... it's as easy as that to understand!

Educators, politicians and many of the general public, still regard university students as children...and therefore, inferior to adults. An old traditional mindset that just can't be changed.

In reality of course, and something many can't grasp, is that students are so much smarter than the "grown ups"....whilst some educators believe that rote teaching is the only way, universities are gradually opening up, because they are being demanded to, as the internet teaches young people to think and act and nowadays, question why and how.
