Fears drive top-flight feedback blitz on ‘Phuket Model’

PHUKET: Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn today (Sept 6) capped off a weekend that saw himself and no less than three deputy ministers and their entourages as well as Member of Parliament representatives from the Bhumjaithai Party visit various communities across Phuket to “gain feedback” from local residents about the ‘Phuket Model’ for allowing long-stay tourists to visit Phuket for holidays.

 

The move follows Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Governor Yuthasak Supasorn revealing that he believes the launch of the so-called “Phuket model” scheduled for next month as part of efforts to revive the local economy, is likely to be pushed back.

 

It also comes as Deputy Prime Minister and Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul just yesterday (Sept 5) led a meeting in Phuket calling for local residents and business owners to be confident as the province aims to navigate and overcome the challenges posed by the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Push it back as long as you wish, I would guess very few are queuing up for to the Phuket Prison Package.

maybe as nobody is daft enough to start booking hotels and flights as it was a even dafter idea

This idea wasa still born any you look at it, to think that people will actually pay to tested, prodded and locked up and still call a "holiday" was as ludicrous and ridiculous to say the least...

One local infection and this idea is dead as a dodo, bit like Phuket is without tourists.

Hoops to jump through, a 2 week restricted quarentine. Then start your freedom holiday.  Return to home country and likely a 2 week quarentine.  Who could find fault.

 I once knew a Model in Phuket ... she did allow tourists to stay longer ... ( if they paid for ) .

I'm not surprised, but it's unfortunate for those wanting to come. I know of a couple separate families that were ready to jump through the hoops to enjoy the peace and quiet the island is currently experiencing.

Pushing it back to a convenient way to save face now that they have realised no one will actually come. Failure is always a bad look.

At least let in the "long term folks".

People with families, properties in LOS, and Non Os.

 

At least I now know wht Phuket was busy with Thai travellers over the long weekend: they were all hangers-on from the various visiting political delegations!

It was never on the starting blocks... just Phiphats pipe-dream.

'Yes it is...no it isn't...maybe...maybe not...er, we don't know let's go ask the public...PM says borders not open anytime soon'. Gee these people simply have no idea. Like many other TV members have said, there isn't going to be a tourist rush considering all the restrictions. Why doesn't the government/TAT etc. just accept the international situation and get on with some real solid domestic plan?

It will be just like Leprosy Island. Can renamed it Corona Island. That name will stay with Phuket for many years.  And hurt tourism for years and years 

Instead of Phuket perhaps combine the program with a tourist stay at a selected prison.  I hear they are great tourist attractions.

The "stillborn" idea is only in the heads of those that ever thought the project was aimed at "holidaymakers".

It is nothing more than an expanded version of the current "Bangkok Model"

 

Obviously this forum would prefer they just stopped allowing anyone to enter.

At this point, I am actively rooting for Thailand to fail. What a stupid government (and, I guess, stupid people).

You mean like the "quarantine chairs" in Europe.

Or the UK where you quarantine in Scotand and Wales, but not England or NI. An arrangement where it is up to individuals to stick to the rules.

You can believe as much as you want that the Thais would be quite happy with the same infection rates as other "international situations", but fortunately it is irrelevant what you want to think.

On, Off, on again and now off again, try using logic next time you plan anything. Currently most international travellers have two weeks quarantine here, maybe a couple of weeks holidays,  then back home another two weeks quarantine. 

Which part of that sounds appealing , none of it Government Numpties trying to justify their insignificant jobs 

 

And around the world 30 million tourists will be revising their plans for a lovely 3 week trip to a state quarantine hotel on the beach.  

By all accounts they 200 people already lined up to test this out.????

A good friend of mine just returned to Thailand  from uk as he has a Thai child there and lives there full time, he arrived on a special flight full of school teachers, did all the necessary  covid checks has to spend 14 days in hotel in Bangkok in isolation, 3days later gets a email from Thai Embassy saying one person on the plane had covid 19, we have no chance of getting back to Thailand this year, anyone have any ideas which country to spend Xmas in this year ????

This shouldn't change anything for your friend, he will still qualify per current guidelines to meet the requirements with the 14 day quarantine and two tests... that is of course unless you comes up positive. Then he is off to the hospital... I wonder what happens after you go to the hospital as a positive? Anyone know? As we know, most never even get symptoms, so how do the Thai health authorities manage you at that point?

So ok most on this forum dont want anyone to go back to Thailand, so how about you lot go out of the country and see if your happy you cant find a way back. People who want to come back long term were out of the country for a wide variety of reasons(mine was a dumb pension requirement in Oz) who now would like to come back to their loved ones and resume the lives they had previously.

Lets keep quite all of us idiot Falangs. Maybe they will pickup one of our ideas and present it as their own which will result in reopening without quarantine.

 

 

Nothing goes back to any semblance of 'normal' until vaccines arrive and are mandated by governments at which time the government and "experts" can declare that bio-tech has instituted corporate 'herd-immunity' and everyone with an 'immunity passport' is free to once again travel. 

It will be a brave new world for sure.  Welcome to dystopia.

Exactly. My second grandson is due tomorrow and I had planned to be there for the birth. I am hoping that there is some way in the not too distant future we can leave and come back. I could live with some additional cost, have already paid for the flight.
