Anutin: Completely safe to open up Thailand to foreign tourism

An upbeat health minister and DPM Anutin Charnvirakul told the media yesterday afternoon after a cabinet meeting that Thailand was completely ready to open up to foreign tourists.

He praised the new arrivals from China like pioneers.

Anutin - famous for his rants against non-mask wearing foreigners early in the pandemic - struck a confident pose at Government House just hours before a group of around 40 Chinese tourists landed at Suvarnabhumi from Shanghai under the STV long term visa scheme.

He told Naew Na that the tourists had already gone through several hoops before arrival, would be quarantining for 14 days and would be continually monitored.

He said that everything would be "safe for sure" and that this represented a "good new dimension" to the return to Thai tourism.

He praised the arrivals like pioneers for their fortitude in accepting all the regulations.

Support was there for tourists and the country could handle larger numbers as had already proved to be the case in the past.

They only came because of the promise of all you can eat shrimp in quarantine

How does he explain the positive cases found in quarantine daily?

I'll say that these Chinese "tourists" are probably 'safer' than the normal re-patters. And that I understand you have to start somehwere.

As long as they quarantine for 14 days everything should be fine.

A good new dimension indeed: 40 tourists instead of 40 million!

Pioneers indeed...the number of tourist arrivals is in the same range as the number of humans having walked on the Moon!

If it were a video clip you could probably see them rolling their eyes at one another.

I think the one on the left is saying ' OOps ' the one just behind is saying ' I think we are on Candid Camera' and the one on the right is going ' Psst ....mask , mask !'

Like most of us on here, I dislike this buffoon..... but could this be Thailand's face-saving way of making an about turn and opening the borders? Let's admit it, they need more money in the pot to buy submarines.

Count down anutin, as the era of stupid old men draws to an end, you'll be going with Prayut into the oblivion of history to be replaced by able young people with a democracy in mind.

O wait TIT.

Indeed, I guess that by "new dimension" he infers being locked up a couple of weeks before you can make a dozen of selfies, under army control, before you are taken to Siam Paragon to buy a mandatory Luis Woo Hi Thon and sent back home.

The mind just boggles, this country still doesn't understand the meaning of the word "Tourism", and worse, remains ignorant of its debt to the Issan girls.

Good move, as long as tourists are checked and kept in 14 days quarantine...????

What’s the money this 14 days quarantine won’t last for long?  Few people are willing to undergo 14 day quarantine.

The Chinese will be exempt from quarantine in a short period of time.

From what I hear he'll be the next PM and you can take that to the bank.

So safe that the tourists are welcomed at the airport by staff wearing space suits and then made to don ridiculous plastic rain coats and face coverings that make them look like idiots.  A great way to advertise the safety of Thailand and the welcome to expect upon your arrival before being locked up in your hotel room for 7 days and spending the next 7 days limited to living within the hotel's grounds. If the video of the 39 Chinese arrivals goes viral kiss goodbye to any revival of tourism.

You might have a point.

Perhaps a new very Thai rule will be announced soon: If they confess to having WuFlu they will only get 7 days.
