A 15-year-old schoolgirl was slapped in the face by a nationalist who got angry when the girl did not stand up for the national anthem at a train station in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province.

On Tuesday, a woman dressed in red approached the girl at 6pm after the national anthem ended and attacked her. Others intervened to prevent the violence from getting worse.

The girl’s family, who arrived to take her home, learned that the assailant was a food vendor at the station. The vendor admitted that she slapped the schoolgirl because the girl did not stand up for the national anthem.

The family subsequently lodged a complaint with the police, asking them to arrest the woman for assault. They explained that the girl was on her period and therefore decided not to stand up during the anthem.

The incident sparked widespread criticism online.

Using violence against children because they won't conform. Classy.

I think someone is starting a kind of Gofundme page so the girl can sue the Thai Karen.

I'd quite happily donate to it. Let's see how proud people are when it hits them in the wallet.

Aside from the fact that standing during a National anthem should be a matter of personal choice, given the law allows such freedoms, the woman in red has no right to do anything, other than possibly making a remark of disapproval. It is an unprovoked assault for which she should be charged and imprisoned, to make her and others think twice before such action. Being Thailand a wai and 500 Baht will probably solve the matter sadly.

She should be charged, however,I fear some may congratulate her on doing "the right thing"!

My married American mate who has worked and lived here for years went to watch a movie a few weeks back. He said when the national anthem came on, he was the only one who stood up. Admittedly, the movie auditoriums at these multi-screen venues are smaller these days and there was at most only half-a-dozen others but these 'sitters' were all young locals.

Sign o' the times I reckon.

This is an isolated indecent, been here many, many years and this is the first time i read about such behavior, and because of one idiot, it should stay in the realm of stupid deeds that many people do everyday some worse than others...

Just to be pedantic,  they don't play the national anthem in  Thai cinemas.

Every time I have been to a cinema here, they play the National Anthem before the film starts, and most people stand up.

They play the Royal Anthem, not the National Anthem, in cinemas.  A few years ago, everyone stood.  Now, not so many!

It sounds like the same song in the cinema as they play at 8am & 6pm on the telly.

i went to movies a few weeks back,i didnt stand only about 25% did ,the poor girl is weak and defenceless. i doubt the woman would have done the same to me  as i can defend myself.outrageous attack on a kid the sieg heil mentality is really at home with a large no of thais i guess centuries of obedience and non thinking create this mindset and culture

Hilarious! Somehow she was able to walk to where she was, and would have to walk back to get to transport or home yet she couldn't stand. Talk about a lame excuse. I'm not not Thai but when in public i always stand and if walking stop.

I suffer from migraine so sometimes standing up suddenly can bring on a migraine attack but I wai during the National Anthem to show respect for the country that I live in. The girl shouldn't have been slapped, which is an assault, but she could have done a wai sitting down.

Well done.

But she is Thai. And if she doesn't wanna stand, that's up to her.

The fact that an 'adult' felt they had the right to use violence towards a child for not standing is a big red flag into why thinking people should conform to your ideas is so regressive and dangerous for society.

Admittedly, the slap was too much, but imprisoning the one who gave it is really overkill.
If, in our countries, we, the natives, we sang our hymn more often, respecting this moment, we would not have hilarious, disrespectful strangers, in sports halls or fields, or near war memorials.
At least this 15 year old will know what to do next time.

And why on earth should she have to wai a national anthem? What does that even mean?

How about some people learn to respect a person's right to sit in peace while not bothering anyone.

It's not the vendor's place to slap the young girl, she has no authority to touch anyone and as such should be punished accordingly,  as for the girl not standing ..... well that's not even worth discussing.
