Prayut to visit Phuket as tourism efforts fall flat

The prime minister will visit Phuket on Monday (November 2) to discuss ways to restore the South’s Covid-battered tourism industry.

The PM will meet with local business leaders and listen to their ideas on how to open tourist island to more visitors, Energy Minister Supattanapong Punmeechaow said on Thursday.

The premier will also hear their requests for government remedial measures.

The government’s so-called “Phuket Model”, proposed in August as a way of reopening Thailand to foreign tourists, now appears to have been shelved.

According to a government report, revenue from foreign tourists has dropped to almost zero in Thailand since a flight ban was imposed at the end of March. Hotel occupancy rates were only 30 per cent in September, increasing from 13.4 per cent in June.

The report indicated that hotels where the occupancy rate was rising were mostly in and around Bangkok. Meanwhile tourism in southern provinces, which are heavily reliant on foreign visitors, was in a very bad state.

A representative from Phuket’s old town said an idea to promote the historic community as a tourism hotspot would be put to the prime minister on Monday.

Yes maybe he will hear their requests, but do the same as always, nothing, but blame others for the problem.

Yes, plus air-tickets that get more pricey during the so-called "long weekend".

This news will certainly save Phuket.

The Hero-General’s words of wisdom and majestic presence will inspire the people to superhuman efforts of tourism promotion. And the opportunity to actually see and experience Thailand’s savior in action...will draw millions of tourists like flies to shi….that stuff that flies like so much.

Yet another vexing problem put to rest….

Most people I know are concerned about their business or job.    A holiday is not on their mind at all.    Again, if they do not have similar visa rules a Malaysia or Vietnam, they will not be as successful in the future.

  • Popular Post

A useless gesture, whose only worth is a photo op and a jolly for the Hero General and cronies. How many times does it need to be said that there are people wanting to return, those with valid visas, homes, families, and investments in Thailand. But can they return? Apparently not.

Until Thailand opens the borders to more than the microscopic level it has at present, and abolishes the crazy number of pointless and expensive hoops, there will be no tourism. And that's assuming any meaningful quantity of visitors will return at least in the short term. The current obstacles will deter any real tourists.

Thailand seems intent on self-harm and ruining its tourism industry. And for what?

Yes and one reason is your idol who is taxing like a crazy man.

From 1 year tax op with 300 %

On business and how much on alcohol and now how much on houses.

And how much do he give back of all the tax he claimed.

Until now almost nothing in all 6 years.

And where he gets the most tax from.

It might not be phuket or Pattaya but they are in top.

Phuket has never been for thais.

And as long as ding dong tax like this it will never be.

Everyone still have to pay tax

So direct your comments where it belongs.

Who throw out the customers.

Use whatever you can just for ones.

Absolutely, I heard today the the 39/40 arrivals were Chinese business people so as of today there have been no tourist arrivals yet.

My suggestion would be for the PM and his associates to fly to another country and then come back into Thailand while undergoing the 14-day hotel quarantine, doing all the COVID tests, going through all the paperwork procedures, etc. to experience what it would be like to be a tourist in accordance with their current plan first. Then, they might gain some useful insight to make things more "open" for "visitors" that could potentially attract real tourists to come... .

Energy Minister Supattanapong Punmeechaow

Where did he come from? Since when is the Energy Minister involved in tourism?
Muppet show.

Perhaps his presence will inspire protesters from all over the country to spend a couple of days in Phuket. That's about the only boost to the economy he's capable of creating.

I thought they were, providing that they quarantine?

Not sure a visit by the enlightened one is going to bring even a sliver of relieve to Phuket's woes, if at all any. Probably just going to end up with lots of picture opportunities, forces smiles for cameras, some idiot blithering about how 2021 will become a record year, and that's that.

Why general sir, the heat is too much in BKK and the good general needs to cool it down a bit eh, hence Phuket?

Standard leader behavior.  When things get hot--in this case protesters calling for you to quit--get out of town and do some traveling--in this case to Phuket to pretend to help.

Well at least the PM and his horde will likely stay at one of the hotels for their

visit. I hope they can see just how deserted Phuket is at the moment.
