A British dad has been left stranded in a hospital in Thailand with catastrophic injuries after falling from a sixth-floor balcony.

Ian Mitchell-Barnes, aged 56, broke his pelvis, both arms and both legs in the fall and has had to have one foot amputated.

The dad-of-two from Solihull, West Mids, has been in a Thai hospital for nearly three weeks now and is facing medical bills of at least £10,000.

Very sad situation.

Was his insurance invalidated due to covid19 pandemic, or didn't he have one in the first place?

According to the article...he had no insurance. As usual...I feel for the guy...but it seems like he had some mental health issues before the 'fall'. And family cannot raise 10K Pounds....hmmm. No savings ..he was retired ...

We can't be sure he paid for the Business Class tickets, but it doesn't look good does it?

After doing some research it appears that the same text is used for several low-quality news sites.

Let's not also forget that some people to sensationalise or even make up stories for a variety of reasons. I am not accusing anyone of anything, but any strangers to put their hands in their pockets after reading what's available in my opinion have bigger hearts than brains. I would be happy to be proven wrong though, and I feel for this guy and his family.

It is a tragic story with a very tragic outcome for this guy. And I have the feeling that not he is begging but as so often the relatives that for whatever reason are not able or willing to pay his hospital bills.

What does the alleged fact that he is a "dad" have to do with anything?

Of course nobody wants to see another person in this situation, and we all hope the story is true and we are not been taken for a ride here. I feel for him too, but why on earth go abroad without insurance?

Any Brit who has lived outside of the UK for more than one year would have to wait 6 months before receiving benefits upon returning.

That's from what I've heard.

May have disclosed his MH issues and diabetes as a pre-existing condition would possibly made him ineligible for coverage.

He worked for the airlines before retirement, explains cheap BC travelling

With those conditions he should have used an international insurer...but many expats with free NHS style coverage at home would never consider buying insurance. It's not something they think about, the answer always is "I'll just fly home"....heard it from dozens here already.

For the same reason a majority of tourist drive their motorbike in this country without a helmet (at least in Samui) I never understood  for if someone falls on a motorbike, even at low or medium speed, their head, and their even more fragile face, may well end up planing the road, and a large majority of tourists of all ages do not wear helmets, this is elementary lack of caution multiplied by such numerous individuals, so why would these same people would  think of taking insurance?

Oh, that is easy. They suffer more severe injuries when falling between 5-9 floor.

Just joking! Just another guy that thinks life is a party without insurance until the ground hits him hard.

That is often quoted and may be the rule but I know of 2 Ex-pat Brits both of whom had been here for many many years who returned to UK because of medical issues and got excellent treatment straight away with no problems.

Where do people get that idea from?

I know 2 Brits who both live in Thailand, went back to the UK, got their problems ( operations done ) then both of them flew back to Thailand.

£10,000 isn't really a lot. Doesn't he have credit cards? he travels around the world. Just use his credit cards to pay the bill.

No insurance No problem....#Go Fund Me....will do the trick...

A very unfortunate, pitiful and unenviable situation for anyone to fall into.

This is another eye-opener to Thai bashers who came up i arms when the Thai immigration mentioned about travel insurance.

Sometimes (in real, always), it is good to think before speaking.

Another one with no insurance and go fund me please help me page.sixth floor balcony and falls something not right they as well
