Bangkok's air quality has seen a deterioration which can affect sensitive groups, the latest readings show.

The Air Visual application reported on Sunday that Bangkok’s air pollution level according to the US Air Quality Index (AQI) standard stood at 112, with the level of particulate matter less than 2.5 micrograms in diameter (PM2.5) at 41mcg per cubic metre (µg/m3), placing it at 27th on the list of cities with the worst air in the world.

AQI is a standard that indicates the quality of air and level of pollution. Level 0-50 means good air quality, 51-100 is moderate quality,

101-105 will start affecting sensitive groups, 151-200 is slightly harmful to health, 201-300 is highly harmful and 301-500 is extremely dangerous.

Meanwhile, the Pollution Control Department reported that air quality in Bangkok and its perimeter is currently fluctuating between very good to moderate with PM2.5 at around 17-48 µg/m3 detected by 69 air quality stations.

The Thai safety limit for PM2.5 is 50mcg per cubic metre of air while the safety limit for AQI is 100.

As of Sunday, the five cities with the worst air quality were: 1. Delhi, India 363; 2. Lahore, Pakistan 261; 3. Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia 191; 4. Zagreb, Croatia 185; 5. Wrocław, Poland 183.

The cities with the best air quality were: 1. Canberra, Australia 0; 2. Sydney, Australia 2; 3. Salt Lake City, US 2; 4. Skopje, North Macedonia 5; 5. Moscow, Russia.

Pattaya's air quality was much worse than that of Bangkok on Sunday.  The numbers here were as high as the 170's.  Our air purifiers had to be put on high speed for the first time in nearly the one year we have had them.

They keep banging on about poor quality air here in Bangkok but I see no problem (my home is at Sanampao area). Today there was blue skies and I had a good workout catching the sun on the 8th floor rooftop by the pool. Glorious day!

soi3eddie - Pm 2.5 particulates are thinner than a human hair.

Great that you can see these by looking at the sky.

Is this owing to burning of cane plantations as last year about this time?

I don't know. The situation seems almost similar all over central and northern Thailand,

and there is not sugar cane everywhere.

Maybe it's the first messengers from far away?

Someone in the media seems to be attempting to fan the flames (no pun intended)

Two articles on ThaiVisa on this subject already.

While more can be done - there is not really any major pollution issue in Bangkok at the moment - the news seems to be an exaggeration of a minor increase in AQI.

That said - more needs to be done to prevent the agricultural burning and inner city pollution from traffic (lorries, trucks, busses etc)

This might be early distraction from the ongoing process.

Of course pm2.5 is thinner than hair! It was clear blue sky yesterday and today. The OP's picture has been photoshopped to make it look like smoke at the top. I live near Victory Monument and have a rooftop pool and deck that I use everday. Recently there has not been a hint of pollution and the weather and atmosphere has been lovely. Even walking on busy Phaholyothin Road today was quite pleasant. Granted that sometimes views acroos the city CAN look smoggy but I don't feel it is ever as bad as is stated in the media. Certainly never anything like Chiang Mai in February to April where it's rare to even see the sun let alone across the city.

As per London where I lived and worked during the 80's and 90's this current pm2.5 thing doesn't seem to correspond to actual pollution and it's immediate effects. I remember choking on fumes in London often in the late 80's but never recently (last few years) yet all one hears about is bad air quality - they must be using a different measure or scale these days.

Learning from History? - Difficult.

No problem.

But you should inform yourself a bit better before commenting.

* aqicn.org isn't fake *   Check any other website.

Too there is a lot of information on the web about PM2.5, AQI etc.

If you might think limit values are only for others?

Stay well.

...and stay reassured, this will increase in Bangkok too.

(Bangkok today 21:00)
