Top mall executive's 30 million baht luxury yacht goes up in flames off Koh Phangan

A large crowd of onlookers gathered at Had Run beach, Koh Phangan in Thailand's south as a luxury yacht burned offshore.

A speedboat was sent to put out the blaze and pluck captain Bancha and his engineer Sanon from the sea.

The blaze was extinguished in 20 minutes.

The yacht has the name "Aew" (name transliterated from Thai and possibly incorrect) and is registered to Suphalak Ampuch an executive of a famous Bangkok mall, reported Naew Na.

It was still legally licensed.

The captain said he was on his way to Koh Samui when the fire broke out. He and his crewman tried to extinguish the blaze but it was fueled by benzin and proved to be beyond their capabilities.

It emanated from the engine compartment.

He said damage to the yacht was in the order of 30 million baht.

The crew are helping the Phangan police and harbor department to determine the cause.

They had time to drop the anchor,  bit odd.

It is quite likely the fire extinguishing equipment was out of date, and the boat had not been properly inspected by the "marine department" in quite some time. Was the executive on board, when this happened? Where are the other details?

Insurance job.

I agree, it looks like a small boat and not one you would call a yacht.

Not very big. I remember seeing Walt Disney's CEO's yacht there in 1992. It was big!

Yacht ,Speedboat cannot be both, 30 million damage bit of an exaggeration IMHO.

It may look like a small boat because the windscreen has gone, but if you look at the portholes: each one is a cabin or heads. It's well over a million USD worth new. That's a yacht, over 50 foot.

Why do Thais always  exaggerate insurance  claims  by such a ridiculous  factor? 3m house doubles it's price when burnt down despite the fact that the value is in the  land not the building on it.  And that is a speedboat  not a yacht! How  stupid  do they think claims adjusters are?

Probably not very deep. One guy goes to fight the fire, other one drops the anchor: no point trying to save the boat just to have it drift onto a reef. Dropping the anchor remotely from the wheelhouse only takes a minute.

Completely incorrect. Look more carefully and you'll see it's way bigger than you think.

Deceptive photo in the original post

Look at the one in JeffersLos link above.

48 foot yacht?

Amazing how often these boats just seem to catch fire ????????

If you look at the relative size of the guardrails the burning one is quite a lot bigger. I'd say 70'

The grammar here suggests that despite being owned by a rich Bangkok businesswoman, it was still legally licensed.

If it was an insurance job it wasn't exactly the location I'd choose. And they can catch fire readily if the maintenance isn't up to scratch or they forget to turn the engine-room fans on etc. Diesel leaks, exhaust leaks, failed turbos, wiring, piles of oily rags..

As they say the happiest days of their lives is the day they buy their boat and the day they sell it! Maybe he just couldn't wait.

Oxford English Dictionary  defines a Yacht as being sail and motor powered.  A floating gin palace is not a Yacht!

So they decided to sell it to the Insurance company. ????

Not very often????

The cruiser is probably half that brand new... if it's got all the bells & whistles.

Including a working fire extinguisher system.

That boat isn’t even 35 feet let along 30 million baht.
