A district chief in Ratchaburi has stopped outsiders coming into the province to pan for gold

Teachers had been taking their children for panning to a canal near the Don Chaeng golf course.

Online posts encouraged others to try their luck attracting many people to the area. Traders had set up on the banks of the klong.

District chief Tossaphon Pheuan-udom went to the area with a host of other officials to call a halt to people panning for gold from outside the province.

He said the provincial governor feared the spread of Covid-19 in an area where there was none.

Mineral authorities are also determining what can and can't be panned in the area.

Did Tossa explain how gold from outside the province got into the canal?

....using the excuse of Covid-19 prevention so that they can hopefully keep the spoils for themselves and their cronies.

They are missing a trick here... The more certain money is not made in actually obtaining the gold but in selling lodging, equipment and other "services" to keen outside prospectors.

All that glitters is not gold. Another way this should, could have been said, 'Gold is not all that glitters'. (What color is the baht for pans, lodging and food?) Which you have well emphasized.

Note: you could have left out the "and their cronies" and your comment would have made more sense. The District Chief and his cronies aren't getting in the mud and getting wet.

(Can you imagine California stopping all the gold hunters from 1848-55?)
