Marijuana could generate up to Bt8 billion for Thailand’s pharmaceutical industry over the next five years, but farmers stand to make little from growing the herb, experts say.

Last year, Thailand removed cannabis and hemp leaves from its list of banned narcotics (seeds and buds remain banned).

Individuals are still prohibited from growing marijuana for sale, though universities, community enterprises, medical professionals and traditional medicine practitioners can seek a licence to grow it commercially.

8 billion Baht over 5 years.

Pathetic.

California collects more than that in taxes alone in 3 months.

Do the math.

1.  Stop growing dirt weed.

2.  Start growing quality strains (Thai bud is not a quality strain)

3.  Just legalize it once and for all.

i got some multi purposes for marijuana.

As clear as mud....

Comparing the potential market (revenue, tax) here to those in a state in the U.S. is just silly, and counter-productive.

Until BoonRawd and ThaiBev get involved, anyway.

This article seems to be mostly about medical cannabis, but it does devolve into decorative leaves at the end. Why are they always prepared "tempura" style?

Commercial hemp, a huge and growing commodity market, was supposed to be a thing, maybe that'll be in tomorrow's news.

Whatever happened to Thai Stick? I recall from my high school days in the 1970s it was considered top of the line.

I have to agree that if made legal this would be a great financial winner. All pot heads from around the world with some medical tourists would find this beneficial. Will it happen.mmmmmm

Why hasn't any other country done this.........

Farmers to make little? The wife tells me it is around 40,000 baht per kilo at the moment but how does she know?

It was in the news Jethro.

Police use 15,000 baht/Kg. So that's the wholesale price. Once it gets to wherever it's going 40,000 seems reasonable.

All this is based on reports in the Thai press.

The farmer probably gets 4,000.

Firchrissake, just legalize it already. I knew a BiB who said the worst thing a stoner did was order pizza. It was the yaba nuts that scared him.

This whole exercise was to allow pharmaceutical companies to because wealthier  as well as a handful of special growers who are essentially given the monopoly rights at growing for this industry.  Individual Thais (who were promised that they're be able to participate with each household being able to produce 6 plants for resale and allowed to grow marijuana like "any other household herb" now find out that it all was a lie and a sham and they were never part of the plan.  Lying is an art-form to politicians like the Health Minister with no credentials in Health Administration but who has a perchance at telling the public some whopping porkies in order to make his friends richer than they already are.

...because the average Thai farmers will never be allowed to grow it.
However, the extra-special "connected" growers who are granted a license by their connected friends stand to make 45K per kilogram.
I'm thinking that beats the hell out of growing just about any other crop in Thailand.  But Thai farmers will make nothing from grown the herb because they will never be granted permission to do so.

They will grow anyway, as many already do...

And profitable! The bamboo stick & thread to tie on the bud were added weight... (So I heard.)
