I thought he was Greek?

Born in Corfu. A prince in the Greek royal family. Gave up his Greek titles when he married the Queen.

Of course it’s not. Many a true word is spoken in jest though.

The permanently offended will always delight in giving it an “ist” of some sort.

My favourite royal. RIP

In what alternative universe is referring to Chinese as slitty eyed not racist? It was both a humorous comment and racist at the same time.

In the alternative universe of the woken snowflakery everything can be construed as racist, sexist, heterosexist, ageist, ableist, etc, etc. Whatever offends their delicate sensitivities is deemed offensive. Usually it’s on behalf of others that neither know nor would even care.

In the Real World - not an issue. Who’s going to provide our ‘gaffes’ now?

Would you call a Chinese person slitty eyed to his face?

Its not really defensible.

Why even try?

Is it necessary to say the departed  prince was perfect?

Yeah, why not?
Haven’t you heard any Chinese comedians before? (Other than politically correct ones maybe.)

Who’s said perfect - was that you making things up?

I think he was of both German and Danish blood.

No Danish & Greek actually.

"Philip was the child of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg.[5] A member of the House of Glücksburg, the ruling house of Denmark, he was a prince of both Greece and Denmark by virtue of his patrilineal descent from George I of Greece and Christian IX of Denmark, and he was from birth in the line of succession to both thrones."

RIP Prince Philip. However, the UK TV coverage has been way over the top! Showing the same hagiography repeatedly on all BBC channels, and similar on ITV, will backfire on the BBC.  Thank God for Channel 4.  I had thought the UK media had moved on and would reflect a more modern public thinking about the monarchy.

Wasn't Princess Alice named after a cake? ????

He was Danish, from the house of Schleswig-Holstien-Sonderburg- something. But I am being pedantic as usual.

It would be a totally different dynamic if a Chinese person said that.

A person could have communicated the same idea about going native without using a racial derogatory term.

Come to Australia you will be called white trash by indigenous people but we had to change the name of Coon cheese which has been the brands name for 120 years

Are you one of these proponents that only white people can be racist? Or is it only when the dynamics are working in favour of your theory?

Not that the PC crowd’s favourite offence causer is such a biggie anyway, and certainly not as important as the wokerati would like to have us believe.

RIP Phil.

Nobody lives forever, your "gaffes" will.

Be strong your Majesty the Queen!!

I don't see them as 'gaffes' - more as a robust British sense of humour and an admirable immunity to media training.

Of course not.

Are you really so dim that you really don't get the difference between joking about your OWN group and a person not in that group?

Dim? Ooo I’m so offended. Aren’t you being ableist there?
No, I don’t get your difference. Why should there be any difference at all? Joking about other ‘groups’, or races for that matter, is not the cardinal sin you types try to make it.

Try saying the n word to a black guy. Do you get it now?

I never said anything about cardinal sins. That's your trip.

I think enough already about Prince Philips gaffes or whatever people want to call them.

This is how comedian Bill Maher announced his death

"Prince Philip Queen Elizabeth's ... dude ... shockingly dead at 99.

He died as he lived. Peacefully in his sleep."

I don’t get how one particular group has been allowed to hijack a word and make it their own, that nobody else is allowed to even utter without causing offence to the woke people.

So you agree that racism is not a cardinal sin for the woke? Well in reality it’s not even a minor infringement of an unwritten rule of etiquette, unless you’re a drama queen.

It was banter, & seen as so.

There were considerably more things being said, & acted upon that were racist.

I am saddened and appalled by the way this post has drifted into something totally out of keeping with this sad event. The usual suspects trying to get one up on somebody else in this circumstance is inappropriate.  Regardless of peoples own thoughts Prince Phillip has passed away and unlike many of us , me included, he was the husband of Her Majesty the Queen for 73 years, my lifetime, so imagine the loss that this elderly lady is now feeling. Show more respect please.

Prince Philip was a true Brit, war hero and a man’s man.

He was Greek, which is why he was known as 'Phil the Greek'.

That's right, he was born in Greece, but his father was accused of being involved in a failed millinery coup and they were exiled,

Below is a picture of Philip as a young boy.

Well he was a naturalised British subject and he did rescind his Greek nationality, so he was as British as you or I legally. However this may, or may not, be of interest to understand his roots. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/apr/09/prince-philip-the-greek-duke-of-edinburgh

Thanks for that I'll ask if the thread can be closed if it continues.

I started it for people to show respect not hijack it.
