BANGKOK, April 16 (TNA) – Harsh COVID-19 control measures can start to revive tourism in May at the soonest, said the Tourism Authority of Thailand governor.

 

TAT governor Yuthasak Supasorn said that tourism will be affected if the government introduces measures to restrict travels and crowd gatherings to curb the novel coronavirus spread in the country.

 

Optimistically if disease control measures are effective as public health authorities expect, tourism can start to improve in May at the soonest, he said.

Sad. I was hoping a lot sooner. It's 14 days to May it will be an unbearable long waiting time.

"Tough Covid Measures Will Revive Tourism" is not the same as "Harsh COVID-19 control measures can start to revive tourism in May at the soonest"

the government has killed domestic and international tourism until the 3rd well passes. 

The most optimistic estimation is July, so 3 months. The previous, much smaller waves, lasted about 2 months.

If infections will develop to tens of thousands per day, this wave might last till autumn.

Nothing left for anybody, but to sit and watch this drama developing.

At this stage nothing can stop this wave. After it culminates it would be possible some guessing work.

Broadly, thai tourism is dead for another several years

My wife has a restaurant, we are in a "red zone" and she cant even find a list of red zone regulations, if there are such a thing. The whole thing is shambolic. Got a friend helping out at a hospital, said sick people were turning up on public buses ????????????????. Fantasy island

The sick people may have ben turning up on public buses, as it may be the only way that they can get there.

Its not coming up on their news reports. Only vague references. And in the report it states "some of the regulations" . Admittedly a more complete list than I saw but why not all conditions? Its ridiculous. I had a Thai look for me on their news services and they didnt do any better than me

Dream on, it will still be on the way up in two weeks time.

 

As soon as they open indoor air conditioned places again it will come back and keep coming back until either they shut them all for good or the vast majority of people are vaccinated - and we know that's not going to happen until sometime in 2022 as they plan to vaccinate half of the population this year.

 

Anything else is delusion, nothing has changed at all.

I was posting this the other day, but I think it's more valid than ever before. With the improving daily numbers I would expect nothing less than tourism to be back next week. TAT is a little pessimistic lately.

Yup. Even if they imposed legit lockdowns in the major cities and stopped travel, there's no way to get rid of it in the smaller villages where it's now going to be running rampant. So even if they got a hold of it in the cities, it would take only a few days for someone to bring it back in and start a new wave

 

They had one chance to stop this, by immediately locking down once the cluster started and prohibiting Songkran travel. Unfortunately this is just going to be the reality in perpetuity

But I am impressed that you have the personal knowledge or insight into the fact that Covid is "running rampant" in the villages.  That doesn't appear to be the case in my village (but then what do I know, I only live here) ...... 24 in the whole of Surin at the moment (population 1.5 million... so that is a rampant 0.0016% of the population).

not an unexpected response from TAT - they never have been in touch with reality and it isn't going to change 

 

Was TAT responsible for allowing the masses to tour around the country spreading CV 19 over songkran - maybe that is something they should reflect on as the virus takes a firm grip on the country, Thailand is likely now to become blacklisted by countries in the west as they are now way ahead of the game in rolling out vaccines - they will ban Thailand as a travel destination as the virus rages across the country

It will take several days to a week to have an impact on local communities - but hey you obviously have your finger on your own pulse and know everything
