New school term could be postponed until June

BANGKOK (NNT) - The new school term, which is scheduled to begin next month, may be deferred to June due to the worsening Covid-19 situation.

Education Minister Treenuch Thienthong said she would discuss the matter on Monday with permanent-secretary for education Supat Jampathong and Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) secretary-general Amporn Pinasa.

She said the Covid-19 situation and its impact on schools and students would continue to be assessed until April 30, to see whether it is still possible to start the new school term in May as planned, but if it is found to be impossible the new term may be postponed to June 1.

The minister said the likely delay would only be imposed once several factors had been taken into account, including contingency plans which each educational authority has put in place to cope with difficulties in arranging in-person classes during the outbreak.

Yeah ok. Let's keep the kids uneducated. Errr. I mean so what is the difference if they actually go to school here except more online learning, less brain washing to be a government conditioned robot.

  • In the Netherlands now all schools have selftests for Covid for the teachers and they have to test themselves 2 times a week. Why not possible here in THailand????

My son's international school was due to start the new term today.  Now we're back to online Zoom classes - 19x 6-year-olds - it doesn't work!  I truly hope that education will come first, and normal

We were just notified by my GF's daughters school that they were pushing the start of the term back from May 17th to May 31st to give them time to obtain more equipment for daily covid safety of the students.  We were supposed to go to the school this week and buy her uniforms and items needed, but that was also canceled.

Cheers guys, another consequence of your inadequate response to the outbreak. Now my daughter will miss school and has important Cambridge exams in May

Amazing really. Schools in Thailand rated at about 25%, and resumption of in-class learning postponed for a month.

Holy Cow makes a useful point.

Agree, online classes just do not work as they should, I have a 13 year old daughter in an International school here and last year when they were closed due to covid they went online but it was very noticeable how she fell behind in the learning. Now in May she has Cambridge check point exams, I suppose they will be cancelled as I can't see them being held online?

Think I can have all the money I just paid out for the new term next month ?

Could be worse she could be in Canada or the U.S.

Personally I think the Thais are trying to do their best and are juggling things.  With the 3rd wave going to class may not be the best thing and I am sure your daughter is like a lot of kids and fed up to the teeth with online

Maybe daddy can teach her

Not good news for those of us with kids and i'm not a fan of online learning

A solution isn't going to come from these leaders get ready for an extension sadly!????

Yes most parents are not good teachers, and if they have to try educate their little ones, it would be just TOO hard to do.

I guess this has always been the case, and that is why teachers have to do the teaching.  It is a tough world we live in.

Geezer

I don't have the Cambridge curriculum,  the resources or the expertise to teach an adolescent in time for important exams. If it was that easy then all students would be home schooled.

We were thinking the same thing, will they reduce the fee's and refund the difference, or will the entire school year calendar be shifted.  On-line instruction is abysmal as the teachers my GF's daughter has are very monotonal, and less than ambitious and exciting in their teaching manner. Most times it was more like here is your assignment do the work in the book and answer the questions I posted.  Home schooling in Math and English however is excelling.

2 week delay on government schools, not sure it'll make much difference

I guess I was lucky enough to also have my degree in education, and being an instructor for my LE Department for 30 years.  Picked up a TEFL/ESL certification back in 2009, and if needed I could always go and teach here in a pinch, but then why.  Just teach to my GF's daughter here at home to supplement her education, but at this point looks like I will need to get up to speed on the school's entire curriculum at this juncture in time thanks to Covid.

2 weeks turns into 3 and then like last year 2 whole months have been lost.

Good thing as we all know how dangerous it is for kids and what carriers they are :). parents pick up their kids wearing masks and keep apart, this is all really silly and hurting the children

Not good news for those of us who teach on "part time" contracts; no school = no classes = no pay!

Perhaps you should have a long hard look at her conventional classes - they are probably conducted along the same lines!

So what about the teachers? My wife works at an international school, has not great lungs from a previous stink on a ventolator, has high blood pressure and lives on an asthma pump. And you winge about your kids needing to be in school. Teachers lives are more important than you kids in school. There is no testing for teachers. All you people moaning about it need to man up like the rest of the world. Maybe think about the teachers lives rather than yourselves and your kids.

Teach them at home and stop bitching. The rest of the world has to do it!

Very true

I know they are, ergo why we do study at home as well.

Here’s the real problem ( PISA EDUCATIONAL TABLES)

Approximately 600,000 pupils from 79 countries, including 37 OECD nations, completed the latest test, which focused primarily on their reading ability.

According to the survey, Thailand ranked 56th for maths, 66th for reading, and 52nd for sciences.

Oh,and it’s getting worse...

In a worldwide pandemic such as this and with Thailand in a 3rd wave with no hope of vaccine induced herd immunity for the foreseeable future than I would question if it would not be safer for your wife to consider her position as a teacher with her health reasons?

Working in an international school here your wife is being paid by the students fees, I know of a couple of schools who already have struggled to stay open because of students being withdrawn as a result of closing last year, putting the teachers out of work.
