Figures are very odd......sudden increase, then 2000+ each day.......doesn't stack up.

The only thing which is spreading quicker than this 3rd wave of Covid in Thailand is the Stupidity of the people making the decisions and the stupid daily predictions of when tourists will return by the Government, Tourism association and the Chief medical officer, you can't teach stupid but apparently you can in Thailand. All the ones I know are very anxious about covid and have been very cooperative with the authorities in this  matter. I remember  last March when the moto sai drivers Masked up and start  using hand gels and the banks and restaurants instituted all reccomended advice and protocols. The casual  dismissal of Thais on this forum is all all too common  but is not accurate and  sadly rooted in ignorance and racism.

I think what saddens me most, is the suddenness of it all.  Christmas 2019, we were all living high on the hog, having a gay old time, slap up meals and buffets by the river, milling about with the great unwashed and the hisos alike, with never a care in the world.
Rolling in and out of speakeasys at 4am,  tumbling home in a taxi and then perhaps taking a train to the north the next day and meeting new people along the way. Hotels were fun places to be, where our children would make friends with other spoilt brats from abroad, and the obligatory holiday friendships would ensue - staying in touch on social media - perhaps meeting up for drinks in Singapore of a weekend. The cheap flights to Saigon, the expat events in neighbouring countries, the endless spill of international visitors relentelssly washing up on the streets of Bangkok - the eternal hustle of traffic vendors from bikes to Tuk Tuks - the quick decision to for once go by boat to a market down along the river - the golden hour strolls along Khoa San Road before settling into a broken armchair on the roadside and dirnking icecold Singhas and having armbracelets made to order, whilst watching aging farangs and their dried out alcoholic Thai brides in their 50's, still teasing the last of his pension out of him, their tanned chicken-skinned arms delivering him another massage whilst they mutter to their friends in Thai and cast a smile to you as you pass.  The endless mill of nubiles decking out the malls and cinemas, the infinite possibilities for eateries at any time of day - the spontaneous trips to Pattaya of a weekend to "let off some steam with the boys"  - the sky diving, the jetskis and the merrygoround of monetary madness that culminated in an horrendous hangover of biblical proportions, but was worth it, as you kicked back in your wicker chair on the patio with a Leo beer and listened to the world go by.

Now. Thailand has lost the dash and flair and whirl in her skirts - the music doesn't play at night - the streets are empty.

The hunger increases, and a tension is in the air.

There's little to celebrate and much to deplore.

The Golden Years of Thailand's heady crown of Tourism have all but up and gone, like a fart in the wind, and it is doubtfull that the glory will EVER return in the same way ever again.  Were you there in the good old days? Did you have your fill?  I hope so my friend, I sure do hope so.

I'll butt in here.

1 - The virus shows absolutely no sign of being defeated, at the very best only being contained by those lucky enough to get the vaccine.

2 - It is constantly evolving and becoming stronger, faster and more deadly.

3 - The response to it by many, not necessarily in Thailand but certainly in many other countries and encouraged by irresponsible leaders, means that wave after wave is being experienced. Thailand, though, has its own problem in leaky borders and sometimes officials who are momentarily blinded by baht as people cross the border.

4 - It is being spread by many who do not take the situation seriously enough and/or who are now suffering lockdown fatigue.

5 - The only way to get rid of the virus, stop it spreading, is to close down everything - and I mean everything - for a period of three weeks. But that isn't possible, so compromises are put in place. Compromises that are pretty much useless, like closing certain businesses, curfews, no alcohol etc.

 

The human race has been given a test by nature and it has not come out of it very well so far. It is far from over, and I agree that it will be well into next year at the very earliest that life will get anywhere close to normal again. Remember when people were saying it would all be over by last year's (northern) summer?

A sad true post....We thought  we had turned a corner  and we could have done if not for the failed vaccine  roll out...No. Thailand will never be the same again nor Pattaya.  Very sad.

Covid has been around for over a year, Thailand did very little testing but did lots of talking how healthcare is ready and can handle it. Turns out not only not ready, but not enough beds, not enough equipment and not enough medication

 

I recall in the start, they mentioned private hospital would be asked or made to provide care, and yet it has not happened, Also why people with mild symptoms are held in the hospital beds, they can either self isolate at home or put them in ASQ hotels so ones in more serious condition can get help

 

That's the logical and the rational thing to do. But if you know anything about Thais, 'logic and rationale ' ain't in their vocabulary!

one point that is not being mentioned is that when a Thai can not eat 3 big meals a day they think they are ding, would explain the amount of people in hospital, and to think the times I have been in hospital I have told my wife and family to eat the meals and got my wife to buy my meals from the restaurant and take away shop at the hospital, must say the menu looked great but when it came to the food

My GF's village is fairly isolated, but 10 people have been carted off to the government hospital in Chiang Rai with COVID symptoms to date. The village is in lockdown; however, while they are checking cars in and out, scooters can use other routes that are not completely blocked.

I'm buying my beer from the local store from across a rope at the entrance, all the locals are wearing masks. Although I think the horse has well and truly bolted. It's now a tossup whether I am safer in the village, or in the Chiang Rai condo.

IMO time for the government to stop faffing about, accept tourism is dead and follow the science. Lock down travel between provinces for a month or two, shut the borders, provide financial support for those out of work.

The numbers are much much higher. If you start to have friends of friends and office staff it is much closer. As we all know the culture tends to be over scared and the local economy can’t be totally killed.

Thais are a curious mix of extreme social cohesion and poor risk assessment, as evidenced by the frequent sight of Thais dutifully wearing masks while riding scooters without safety helmets.

A symptomatic cases are taken to a different place (field hospitals)  so it should not effect the beds for cases like this.

The figure in Thailand of the UK strain is 98%. Without it it would be pretty much normal here like the second half of last year.

Wait until the Indian strain arrives. That better never happens.
