Immigration warns foreigners to wear face masks. Photo: PR Phuket

By The Phuket News

PHUKET: Phuket Immigration officers have warned foreigners that all people in Phuket should wear face masks in public places, including both Thai and foreign residents alike. The warning comes after a foreigner was charged for riding his motorcycle without a helmet and also received a warning from police for not wearing a mask.

The warning was posted yesterday (May 8 ) on PR Phuket’s official Facebook page with the Royal Immigration Police insignia and words “Phuket Immigration” ion the top left corner. The publication was supported by photos of the unnamed foreigner riding helmet-less.

It was explained that Phuket Immigration was alarmed by the pictures posted on “Hod Jang Jangwat Phuket” page in Facebook.

Our illustrious leader must be fuming! I bet he didn't get 'a warning' before his 6,000 Baht fine.

I like the crash helmet above!

Many years ago I knew of a guy who glued a piece of brown shagpile carpet to his helmet. He was constantly being stopped by the police.

Seriously?

Doesn't the science say that the chance of contracting the disease outside is very low, and one might think that while riding a m'bike the chances would be nil, unless a passenger was sitting in front and breathing corona virus into his nose.

We're always being told to follow the science by some posters, so are they going to post about this?

Researchers say infections can happen outdoors, but the chances are massively reduced.

Fresh air disperses and dilutes the virus.

It also helps to evaporate the liquid droplets in which it is carried.

On top of that, ultraviolet light from the Sun should kill any virus that's out in the open.

..the phrase "in the open" is difficult to define and apply to all situations and scenarios...a matter of common sense to apply it where the spaces are less...it wont hurt you to keep wearing a mask in the open until we reach 70% vaccinated; which maybe a few years...so we all need to help each other here.. don't we!

I agree but why are the parks closed so people can’t go jogging so they have to do on the street, and I see they still jam 10 or 12 people in the songtows in Chiangmai.

so we all need to help each other here.. don't we!

So, should I support all the charities helping poor people in the world? Same same but different cause. What makes corona more deserving of my support than malaria or treating dirty water.

What does mask-wearing have to do with immigration?

Is advice from the CDC good enough for you? NB the bit about those who are unvaccinated can go outside without masks in some situations, too. I'd say riding a m'bike would fit that scenario.

https://apnews.com/article/cdc-mask-wearing-guidance-d373775ddcf237764c19ff9428b59634

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention eased its guidelines Tuesday on the wearing of masks outdoors, saying fully vaccinated Americans don’t need to cover their faces anymore unless they are in a big crowd of strangers.

And those who are unvaccinated can go outside without masks in some situations, too.

There is absolutely 0 (ZERO) chance of spreading or catching this virus while maskless and riding a scooter. There is a better than even shot of smashing your brains out when helmet less. Your choice but if you’re a gambler.........

The term "open space" has been exploited by some people.

Basically if you go outside your front door put a mask on... lets not forget while some challenge the effectiveness of masks for the protection of Covid they still work for the ever present PM2.5 which is probably more likely to destroy your lungs.

Immigration is the agency responsible for the entry and stay in Thailand of non citizens.

It's quite reasonable for them to convey a warning to their cliental about new special laws in these unique times.

They are also a branch of the RTP.

You have got to ask yourself if you are in the right job if you get "alarmed* by 1 person without a facemask.

Maybe dont go to some of the markets you'll end up on the floor foaming at the mouth.

Regarding mountain biking, masks reduce oxygen intake - which can be very dangerous for those who do not have strong cardio vascular systems. I would assume that the same also applies to runners.

Same with the big trucks that transport the cheap labour workers to and fro,i still see them pass every night on petchakasem road 30-40 packed like sardines to each truck,no doubt stopping off at various 7/11s and food carts. But hey ho keep the gyms and running areas and even the big pier closed, crazy.

Maybe the big money company directors should be held accountable not the small fry, TIT.

I have not seen a single check point or anyone being charged for not wearing a helmet since arriving on the island more than 1 month ago while most Thai riders are riding around not wearing a helmet. Lucky falang (randomly????) selected and fined I guess.

I'd rather be in Thailand, mask wearing and all, but if I have to live elsewhere I'm very happy it's NZ where no one I've seen in the last year wears one, except on public transport, and no one is giving me the evil eye for not doing so.

I wonder how many years are you going to accept covering your face? seriously, I mean how many?  if we don't have faces, we are not human, life is short...   We need to protect life...  but that assumes life is meaningful and worth living... cowering in our homes and covering our faces for years kinda diminishes what life is....

Amazing, farang gets nation wide coverage, yet everyday hundreds of thousands of Thais dont wear a helmit and I personally see many thais that dont wear a mask.

Yes, this farang needs a kick up the bum for not complying to rules, however, seems like two sets of rules, one for us and one for Thais. ????

i guess i am uninformed. Why do I need to wear a mask if i am riding my motorbike in the mountains. If I stop, i put on a mask. I really am not after the legal answer. I am after the safety answer. Can i get the virus driving 40 m/h on my bike in the mountains. '

I assume no.

Believe me you will get plenty of that in thailand at the moment if you forget or misplace your mask ! even from other falangs, and to be honest ive been here a few months already could stay a couple more using covid extension, but id rather be back in scotland up in the hills and mountains total freedom, least till this ott crazyness blows over, which will be a long time yet.

I'm all for wearing masks in certain areas, but having to wear one on a motorbike is taking it too far.
The fact that this even made the news just goes to to show that they were more concerned about him wearing a mask than a crash helmet. Doesn't exactly send a very good message for basic road safety does it...

It's not such a bad idea to wear a mask if you are riding a bike it can protect you from breathing all that dust that get kicked up

Masks are totally pointless unless used once, never touched then incinerated after use.
