About 70% of all new COVID-19 infections in Thailand are of the Delta (Indian) variant, which is 1.4 times more transmissible than the Alpha (UK) strain, said Dr. Yong Poovorawan, chief of the Centre of Excellence in Clinical Virology of the Faculty of Medicine at Chulalongkorn University.

In his Facebook post today (Saturday), the well-known virologist said that the Delta strain was first detected in Thailand among construction workers and, by now, has become the fourth variant of the virus which causes COVID-19 in Thailand. Currently, the dominant strain is the Alpha variant.

The spread of the Alpha variant began in entertainment venues in the Thonglor area of Bangkok, he said, adding that, in this third wave of the pandemic, it has replaced the G variant, which characterized the second wave of pandemic, which originated in Samut Sakhon among migrant workers from Myanmar.

More to the point, what is the number of Beta variant cases because the AstraZeneca vaccine is totally useless in dealing with this one which is in the wild in southern Thailand and will spread from there.

All soon to be followed by Delta Plus and Lambda variants

lambda is a bit further down the list but there are -

Epsilon (B.1.427/B.1.429) – first identified in the United States

Zeta (P.2) – first identified in Brazil

Eta (B.1.525) – first identified in multiple countries

Theta (P.3) – first identified in the Philippines

Iota (B.1.526) – first identified in the United States

Kappa (B.1.617.1) – first identified in India

before you get to Lambda.

I'm now taking bets that the 5th one soon coming to Thailand will be the Omega variant followed by the Sigma variant.

The omega will be 80% more contagious than the Delta and the Sigma 100% more contagious than the Omega variant.

What are the odds.

70% Delta cases but..... then says alpha currently the dominant strain??? Typo in reporting??

Or maybe he's borrowing TAT's calculator again.

The numbers are not inconsistent.  70% of new cases are Delta.  but previous cases still total up such that Alpha is the dominant bouncing around.

But again.., so what?  How many people are really suffering severely from the virus?  How many people are dying?  How many people actually had or have the virus?  Without testing every body you don't know the actual percentages of harm or mortality. If 6 million Thais had or have the virus then the percent of harm is relatively low.  If you only count those that tested positive well, the harm is relatively high.  In statistics, you must know the sample space properly
