I cannot speak for Australia, but I believe your post with regards to the situation in New Zealand is not correct. Currently there are no cases of Covid in the community in New Zealand and 12.8% of the population are fully vaccinated and the effort ramping up as planned. See the graphs in the link below. NZ Government although not perfect are pretty open and transparent and there is plenty of data to look through for those that want to.

 

The New Zealand program of vaccination is pretty fair, with 4 groups being identified, from highly vulnerable to lower risk, with factors such as occupation ( border worker, ASQ worker ), ethnicity, age, underlying health problems being used to make the group assessment.  Largely vaccination has been carried out with the highest risk groups first, moving to the least vulnerable. A quality vaccine Pfizer is being used for the program for the entire nation. Total deaths 26 or so almost all from the first wave. 

 

It would be very interesting to see the vaccination data for Thailand especially the socio-economic groupings and their vaccination rates. I doubt it is available. Suffice to say any person who is currently resident in New Zealand is included in the program when their group is vaccinated, if they wish to receive the vaccine. Unlike Thailand where apparently many foreigners and poor rural dwellers are not able to be vaccinated even though age and health mean they are vulnerable, whilst young Thais in certain geographical areas such as Pphuket can readily access vaccines, even if they are not highly efficacious ones. I note that the OP reports that Thais who wish to travel abroad are to get some of the Moderna vaccine.   

 

Interesting that both Thailand and New Zealand were lauded early on for their response to the Covid crisis. It would seem that New Zealand has largely kept up its good response, but sadly Thailand has not.

Yes, New Zealand has done a great job in keeping out Covid. But to be fair, it consists of 2 islands so it has a huge advantage. No porous borders to contend with. And it was slow to purchase vaccines.

They did say they'd sign a contract on the 23rd so well done.

 

As the contract is with a supplier and not the manufacturer (Moderna), I assume the contract can be released to the public? (Yes, not gonna happen.)

 

So this is the 5 mm, originally purchased by Thais (and a few foreigners) via private hospitals.

 

Then the Thai Red Cross skimmed 1.1 mm doses, still no one has revealed who is paying for these 1.1 mm doses. (Yes, I know who.)

 

So that leaves 3.9 mm.

 

FWIW, there is leaked draft memo, never sent, that the RTA wanted some/all of those TRC doses.

 

The RTA has acknowledged that the memo is authentic, but that it was never sent, nor "authorized".

The fact is that whatever their level of trust in, most nations don't accept that Coronavac is proven to meet their vaccination standards. So without Moderna, they have a lot less options for international travel.

It's good they finally finished this.  The thing is they should have ordered at least 50 million doses, not 5 million.  They could have easily sold them.

 

In the meantime the US just bought another 200 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine.

Then the delay was most likely to make sure those at the top got enough of a cut from the deal?  ???? They didn't have the money because they put it all in their deep pockets since the beginning of the outbreak when they said(and thought) everything was under controle . Now when it's time to pay up they say they don't have the money . But they have the money to keep on talking about subs and spaceships . I wonder if there is ever someome going to look into this moneygrabbing sceam . I think they thought that Grab delivery was doing so well they wanted Grab as well , only they Grabbed without giving any service .

The question: Do they have a plan for distributing the doses if they get them? Says nothing about that.

5 million doses of X.  2 million doses of Y.   200,000 doses of Z.  The country needs 140 MILLION doses to cover its entire population, and that's before booster shots, which it is becoming increasingly evident many people will need some time in the next 12 months.  When will they start signing contracts for 30 or 40 million doses at a time?

Sooner or later the Czar must accept that the population here needs to be vaccinated - and the sooner the better if even more agony is to be avoided - so (as others have noted) why just 5 mill?

 

Yes, wait times are already long enough (as others are already in the queue), so why not order 50 or 150 million?

By now there must be newer vaccines in the global works unless the "rich countries" have stopped bank rolling the research & development costs.

One announcement after another, which vaccine donation was it that had a caveat attached, x amount of doses are for foreigners?

They have done some 'deals' I've read of at least 14 'deals' either in the pipeline or 'done' 

And I don't think I've seen a 'deal' with a figure of more than 10 million vaccines, one would think that if you are doing a 'deal' then you'd negotiate for a large amount to gain bigger discounts etc.

The only 'deal' these clowns have done is to 'deal' the public a load of BS.

Moderna will only be available to the private hospitals and smart people who paid in advance.

While Pfizer is a lot better than Sinovac, in Israel the latest news is that Pfizer is only 39% effective in preventing infection from Delta:
