webfact
Picture: Daily News A Thai daughter dumped her aging and Covid infected father at a temple and fled. It was a bit like leaving a dog you could no longer care for, notes ASEAN NOW. The daughter arrived in a car from Lopburi at the temple of Wat Suan Thamma Sawatdee in Bua Lai district of Nakhon Ratchasima province in Thailand's north east. She told chief monk Luang Phor Sitthichai that her dad knew him well and had to stay there. She dumped him with clothes and a bag then drove off without another word, reported Daily News. It emerged that she had come from Lopburi as the story hit Facebook with claims the man had Covid-19. The authorities were informed and the monks waited with instructions not to go near him. But in the morning he crawled out of the monks quarters and was lying in the sun by the side of the road. Fearing he was going to die the chief monk took more decisive action and called for an ambulance. It was then confirmed that the old man indeed had Covid and monks at the temple had to go into a 14 day quarantine. The local phoo yai baan implored people not to dump their sick relatives at the temple but to take them to local health care centers instead. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2021-07-28 - Whatever you're going through, the Samaritans are here for you - Follow ASEAN NOW on LINE for breaking COVID-19 updates

Popular Post KeeTua
"It was a bit like leaving a dog you could no longer care for, notes ASEAN NOW." That's unfair to say "like leaving a dog" and dump is too harsh of a word (it was used in the Thai article also) without knowing the whole story. And for the record he crawled out to the road himself from the Wat, daughter did not dump him there on the road as the picture and headline would have you believe. In an act of desperation she left him at the temple because she ran out of options? Maybe no room in the hospital and keeping him at home he was sure to die. By leaving him at the Wat maybe he would stand a better chance of getting help? Who knows but these are surely unique and very difficult times for many in Thailand when hospitals turn away people clearly dying. 11

timmyp
He sure seems a long way from death if he was sprawled out on the ground for so long and then crawled to the temple the next day. While the initial target reaction to the headline seems like it would be "the situation is so desperate in Thailand from this horrifying disease that people are abandoning their aged parents," it seems more likely to be a case of: economic lockdown driving people to desperate measures, or a drunk that the daughter wanted to get rid of a long time ago, or just outrageous paranoia of what to do about covid 19. Or all of those. If he would have died of thirst on the side of the road, or died from exposure to sun or whatever because nobody would approach him, would he be reported as a covid death? 1

It's what happens when adults have the mental age of a child. So often the case here and then they struggle to cope with a challenge. If he's sick then she should have taken him to a hospital (cost of treatment 30 baht). They, not temples, treat sick people.
cardinalblue
Actually by her dropping off her father at the temple , probably saved his life for now… she could have just left him at home unattended… the title is trying to make her look like a terrible human being…maybe she is but many facts missing from the article….maybe her siblings are worse? 1 1

Thailand has been on Meltdown for some time now. The Workers that are just shuttered away in stinking Camps with little care. People sent to " Community Hospitals " while waiting for Hospital Beds. Read - Tents under a Motorway Bridges. People lying in the street for 12 Hours before Health Workers collected the Body Workers locked inside their Factories like Slaves. Citizens dying in their Homes with little or no care given. Yup ! I think these things constitute a meltdown. 1 1

Mental age of a child? How would you cope with the challenge of a dying loved one that still has a chance to survive but the government hospital can't accept them because they're full and a private hospital won't accept them because you can't afford it? Without knowing all the details it appears this woman may have made a calculated decision, right or wrong, that the best chance of survival for her father or maybe a good place for him to die was at the Wat.

You are assuming that she couldn't find any hospital to take him, which I think is extremely unlikely as she drove nearly 200kms before overloading him at a temple where, she says, he knew someone. Taking him to a place where he was guaranteed not to receive treatment and placing the burden of him on others isn't the action of a responsible adult. The daily infection rates surpass what the health system can cope with, more people will be treated at home instead of in hospital where they should be cared for by professionals, not family members. And isolated where they cannot infect more people. My friend on Sunday felt unwell, went for a test on Monday> positive result. Told to go home with some medication return Wednesday afternoon for a re-test. [They have symptoms headache, sore throat, coughing, aches and pains, breathing restricted and painful]. Wednesdays test> answer, wait 2-3 days for a result at home, more medication. If positive treatment at home will continue. Can you imagine what this strategy will achieve if rolled out nationwide?
