Transport minister Saksayam Chidchob announced that six more sections of roads will have the new 120 kmph speed limit from September 1st, 2021.

Ultimately the plan is to have 1,109 kilometers of Thai four lane highways under the new plan.

It began on April 1st on a 45.9 km section of the Asia Highway from Bang Pa-In heading north.

Saksayam told Daily News that compliance had been good with people observing the speed limits in each lane, surveys had shown.

Signage in a picture showed the speeds as 80, 100, 100 and 120 from the far left lane to the right high speed lane.

Phase 2 starting next month will see 132.13 kms of highways/sections embrace the new system.

They are:

1. Route 1 for 10 kms in Pathum Thani

2. Route 1 for 23.96 kms in Nakhon Sawan.

3. Route 2 in Nakhon Ratchasima 13.5 kms.

4. Route 32 in Ang Thong and Singburi 61.473 kms.

5. Route 34 (Bang Na to Suvarnabhumi Airport) in Samut Prakan 13.5 kms.

and

6. Route 304 in Chachoengsao 9.7 kms.

Phases three and four will begin on 113 kms of nine roads next year.

Memoranda of understanding are being signed to allocate budgets for 47 more roads comprising 863 kms thereafter.

The high speed roads have special features including no regular U-turns to maximise safety.

Actually, I'm thinking this might be a good rule. Let's just hope the drivers will slow down and follow this new traffic law...

Just allowing more people to get killed as more untrained drivers exceed their capabilities.

People observing speed limits in every lane he says..

They all drive in the same lane, there is no lane discipline here

As if there isn't enough road fatalities in this country as it is to allow this kind of speed...

Seems to me the be the biggest waste of money even making speed limit signs in LOS

Or  indicators or  brake  lights or tyres with tread on   and from what Ive seen locally even brake   shoes at the rear as  all drivers that turn up here have to stick a  rock  under their wheels to stop them  rolling  back.

Nah ...just meter.

How many countries in the world send such signals by INCREASING speed limits?

The one that does is among the most dangerous worldwide.

Makes sense?

Due to forgetting to take their handbrakes off when mobile. Putting the motor in gear when parking up helps.

Well that should help keep some drivers well under 200km per hour at least. ????

they have to get the number of road deaths above the daily covid death number somehow....

good news, hopefully they can crack down on slow drivers, they are the ones causing the accidents and aggression on the roads

Certainly they are often responsible for dangerous overtaking !

Ridiculous.  Thais drive as fast as they can until the reach the vehicle in front of them.

and the U turners from the furthest lanes that then cut across all the other lanes

Plenty of instances of 50mph limits being increased to 60mph in the UK where the reduced speed proved ineffective in reducing accidents but very good at creating bunching. Does that make the UK 'among the most dangerous' ? because the records seem to show it is next only to Sweden for safety.

Speed is rarely the only cause of a crash (if it were, no motor race would ever finish). Lack of attention and inability to control the vehicle properly is far more prevalent.

While a step in the right direction, this does not matter. We drive safely at 120kph, and when we get speeding tickets in the mail, we simply throw them out. There is no coordinated system, and there are no repercussions. And it gives me tremendous pleasure to deny any money to these toxic goons.

People are going to drive as fast as they want to drive. Speed limits have little to no impact on that. And 90kph on a major highway is simply juvenile.

Now Thailand with the worst accident rate in the world, has found a way to kill each other faster than Covid. Welcome to Amazing Thailand.

That's because the speed signs are more of a suggestive than a firm mandate.

This is news?

Why is this site suppressing the news of the heinous MURDER of a tourist in the Phuket 'sandbox'?!

Disgusting protectionism for tourist dollars!

And undertaking.... but of course they are not responsible for that transgression.

Plus if you add to your list that most drivers here are not properly trained to drive the vehicle and the driving test is a farce.

Might be a hidden strategy in there...

A 120 km\hr speed limit, which will turn into 130 t0 140 km\hr for these people who cannot bear having another vehicle in front of them.

This would result in more accident victims driven directly to the morgue, rather than than to the hospital.

Well, hospitals are now needed for Covid victims who do want to live....

But seriously, a country that has the infamous first or second prize as generating the most accidents and deaths on the roads, are increasing the speed limits. Oh well....

what great idea !!  figures will help keep the death rate top of the world records

I find the best way is to drive worse than the locals. Works in all countries.

Must have been an increase in the qouta to reduce the population and screwing up the management of Clovid-19 wasn't cutting it
