Victim of theft, options from here?

My ex has stolen about 75k thb worth of possessions from me and scarpered to her hometown. I know where she lives and where her house  in her hometown is but I don’t really fancy a potential run in with some gun toting caveman over a bag and some jewelry. Any ideas or just cut losses and move on?

Whatever you do: Don't do anything stupid!

If you want some inspiration what you could do and how that would be a stupid idea then read: Private Dancer from Stephen Leather.

You will learn a lot!

Yes.

3 Options.

1) Police Report - give them a copy of your ex’s ID & address, offer the BiB a reward.

2) Work a way to get you ex back, get back together etc, get her to bring back the items. Then kick her out.

3) She’s sold them already, it’s a lost cause & the BiB ads too lazy to do anything about it unless you have a ‘connection’.

A long time ago an ex of mine did the same but it was more money.

I made a report to the cops and 5 years later she was arrested at the airport on her way to the UK

and was thrown in jail for three months.

After that she talked to a friend of mine complaining about how bad i was.

Cest la vie.

What was the solid proof you provided to the cops to cause her arrest at the airport years later?

I guess I would not pursue it, nor would I dwell on it. Suck it up as a lesson in life and move on.

Oh, maybe get your locks changed........................

Good luck in the future mate,

Cheers

You will find it hard to believe but the officer that i reported it to told me she makes Thai

people look bad and she should go to jail but unfortunately this case does not have any urgency.

He said that id she would have been selling drugs it would become a priority .

Such was not the case.

Then he asked me what she looked liked and i told him i did not have a picture with me.

Then he told me he had a lot of these cases and pointed at a pile of files in the corner of his desk

Guess what? The top file had her picture on it!

He told me she was a bad woman and cheated other foreigners also.

The guy that was there before me made that other report earlier that morning.

Sometimes justice does happen,i did not see any money back but knowing she spend time

inside almost makes it worth it and it is long ago, when i first came to Thailand.

File a police report making sure that the report notes the total value stolen, keep a copy of the report, and then forget about it until the time comes to file your 2021 tax returns.  Then maybe you can deduct the loss, or even write it off as a "home improvement expense", because it sure sounds like your home just got a LOT better......

Chalk it up. You got off lightly. And you mention that you know her address. Well she knows yours too and I'm sure she's a lot more vindictive than you. Laugh it off. NEXT.

As most people have said on here, forget it, walk away lesson learnt. Also do not go to the village, better to live a long life than end up dead, life is cheap here.

Everyone says the police are useless.. But I think that comes with a  very big 'it depends'... If they want to, they are swift and because they have few constraints and procedural limitations kind of crudely effective.. Thats entirely to 'if they want to'.. If this is in a tourist mecca, Phuket Patts Islands etc.. Almost certainly they have other income motivations, the police that pay to get a promotion to Phuket, are the ones who are now trying to work out what income they can secure to make that payment worthwhile, you dont come into that unless as a target. However I have found the police in urban Thai centric areas to be much more interested in doing thier jobs.

It comes down to, do they want to help you.. Do you have any connected or socially senior Thai who could come with you to the police station ?? Do you have a connection with a police 'fixer' who operates as a sort of freelance consultant to help people get in front of the ones who create solutions ??

When I lived in tourist Thailand I had the same mindset as the majority of the posters above... Now I live outside of that and have a bit more nuance on how they are motivated, what they will respect, I would feel that the outcome isnt as clearly impossible, but many of the factors that get a successful resolution or at least some kind of payback, depend on how you integrate and navigate thier ways.

If it's a bag and jewelry then I'm guessing you bought it for her as a gift and thus she sees it as her personal property.

In Thailand these are seen as a form of savings to be pawned in when times are tough..

This is her income until she gets sorted out with the next sponsor.

Learn you lesson and move on.

Lesson learnt, the penis is more powerful than the brain. move on or end up in hospital/morgue.

I have a sneaky suspicion she might feel these were hers anyway, unless you enjoy dressing up?

If you make a police report, they go to court with the evidence, if the evidence is enough the courts issue a warrant. The next time they go anywhere in Thailand that requires them to prove identity they ping on the computer and get arrested.

Obviously a very common situation and many may disagree with my advice.

1. Do not bother going to the police. Rule - have as little to do with the TH police as possible.

2. Do not go to her village. Rule - that NEVER works out well.

3. It's only money and stuff. Rule - the cost of living in TH.

4. Consider yourself very fortunate that this matter can be closed and you can move on. Rule - you only have one life to live, so live it.

A lawyer friend of mine says a copy of that book should be handed to every single male traveller arriving in Thailand.

Yes i had a copy of the warrant and the police told me to carry it with me,if i would see her any where

take the warrant to the nearest police station and get her arrested.

I think i still have it some where.

In addition to the advice already given, do what you can to prevent this from happening again.  She may well think she got away with it one time so why not do it again.

If it were $75K I'd think about it.

75K TB, nope.

That's a lot of money!

Is this out of character?

If not at least make a report and keep a copy.

It'll come in handy when you don't allow her entry to your property and she makes a stink.

You can show the report to police if there's a problem or things escalate.

Hopefully there's not children involved and you can settle things amicably.

Smart not to go to her hometown for a confrontation which will only end up badly.

Good thing you seperated

  She sounds a little unhinged.
