NACC investigate Thaksin over losses at Thai Airways

I hope that once the current Muppets are out of power, investigations are also launched and prosecutions follow because of their corrupt practices and failures.

Needless to say new unbiased NACC members who are not beholden to the army will be required.

Ex-PM Thaksin and 4 others face NACC probe for THAI’s purchase of 10 Airbus aircraft

 

 

Thailand’s National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has set up a panel to investigate fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and four others over their collective role in the purchase of ten Airbus A340-500 and A340-600 planes, worth about 53 billion baht, in 2003/4, a purchase which is blamed for Thai Airways International’s (THAI) heavy losses.

 

The four other individuals are Industry Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit, then transport minister, then deputy transport minister Pichet Sathiravan, Thanong Bidaya, then chairman of the board of THAI and Kanok Apiradee, then THAI president.

 

NACC Deputy Secretary-General Niwatchai Kasemmongkol told the Isra News Agency that the NACC set up a panel to investigate the aircraft procurement at its meeting on August 28th, but he declined to provide further details.

Haha yes - My son was asked by his teacher to make a speech about 'interesting History'. I told him he can mention that the longest serving 'Father' of the people was more interested in self enrichment than in getting healthcare for poor people. Whilst the leader who instigated the great 30 baht health scheme was also one of the most corrupt, and sent out minions to murder some 2500  people because the leaders are always above the law.

 

In a land where CP decides where the government buys vaccines and the leader is constantly trying to explain away ridiculously expensive watches it's only 'news' worthy when they're NOT being investigated or locked up...

 

I find it hard even to begin to imagine how many hidden 'fat cats' there are with 40 supercars and billion baht empires on a simple non-graduate's salary. Nothing gets done without doing some hard graft!

I wonder if, in the future, this present unelected PM will ever be held for trial over the many indescripences  he is responsible for, ie the situation regarding the vaccines, the spread of the Cvirus and unnecessary deaths caused by his incompetence etc.

The NACC members are not appointed by the government, they are nominated by the yellow network and have been already biased before the coup. They will never go after the current Muppets unless it is decided at a higher level.

As long as he's under the umbrella of protection stemming from those influential ones, can't see it happening. 

Whether he steps down, ousted in some manner or hangs around in the shadows - a likelihood nothing will come of it.

According to the story, Thaksin was responsible for 

 

1    Losses incurred from the non-stop routes were estimated at 12 billion baht, out of total losses of at least 39 billion baht from the entire fleet during eight years of operations,  before the entire 10-unit fleet was decommissioned and left at U-Tapao airport in Chon Buri province.

 

2   The committee also found that seven Rolls Royce Trent-500 engines, procured by THAI as reserves and worth about 3.5 billion baht, have never been put to use since their delivery to the national flag carrier.

The reason that they were not used is BECAUSE they were spare engines and none of the aircraft needed a spare engine.

 

3   Moreover, the decommissioned fleet has not been properly maintained, to the extent that the planes are in such a poor condition that there have been few potential buyers and those there have been offered very low prices.

Thaksin was removed in 2006, the aircraft were "stored" 8 years later, and Thai was responsible for maintaining them and NOT Thaksin.

 

To sell them at a reasonable price would mean doing a major strip and rebuild on each one and then hope to find a buyer who is stupid enough to want them at the new updated price. IMHO there are more than enough unused aircraft in good condition around the world, and it is a buyers market nowadays. IF Thai are lucky they may get scrap value for the aircraft, and even then hey will have to fly the aircraft to the salvage yard.

This was investigated back in 2019 with a conclusion in Aug 2020.  Major corruption was found, but very little said about Thaksin at the time.

The junior minister has also revealed that the legal arm of the government, the Council of State, had ordered the investigating panel to wind down its inquiries.

This was on the basis that, after last May, Thai Airways was stripped of its status as a state enterprise, therefore, removing its oversight of the airline.

In essence, the probe had lost its legal basis in law to exist.

 

Seems the inquiry was getting too close to some hiso's not working for TA and they decided to close the investigation down.

 

The case lost its "legal basis in law" back then.  Why / how are they bringing this up again now?
