Did You Listen To What Momma Told You?

Featured Replies

Did Mum or Dad have any favourite adages or sayings  to help guide you through life?

Did they really turn out to be true and wise? Did you take any notice? Too late maybe?

My Mum had three favourites:

"You're not put on this earth to be an ornament."

"The world doesn't owe you a living."

"Be good. If you can't be good, be careful."

What 'wise' advice did you give your own children? Did they listen?

I don't recall my parents ever giving me any advice, lots of silence, lack of interest, and ignoring except when shaming, or discipline was decided was needed.

Where there's muck there's money , never be afraid to get you hands dirty boy.

One thing my Dad said to me which he got wrong was son, marry your own kind (ethnicity) as she will look after you because she will understand our culture, that was the worst 12 years of my life, she was a real Princes in her own mind.

My mum was always saying work, save and buy property, she was 110% correct, although I was too busy having a good time going out doing the Saturday night fever thing every weekend, which I loved, although did take my Mums advice and purchased my 1st property at 24, and then continued from there on, it all paid off 30 years later when I sold up and moved here.

What have I learned from the above, Dad didn't take into consideration that the next generation of women grew balls.

Mum didn't practise what she preached, even though she was 110% correct, but with 4 sons, and a husband who loved the pub more than being home, I can understand why she didn't didn't realise her potential.

"Would you go follow your friends if they all jumped off a cliff?"
No mum.  I wound not.

How apropos!

Mum always said 'if you wish with one hand and schitt in the other, only one hand is holding something.

Work - don't wish!'

My Grandad always said "never believe anything that you read in the newspapers", he was right, I'd add or watch on TV to that nowadays...

Never marry a catholic-so I married a buddhist

My mother told me the same, so I married two Catholics then a Buddhist, third time lucky I think.

Dad gave me two pieces of solid guidance in life. Don't take any prisoners, and if you can't bury your mistakes then make damn sure you can successfully blame them on somebody else.

I remember my father telling me that by carrying out a certain practice it would turn me blind.

I remember responding that

“ could I do it a little bit and wear glasses”

He was obviously correct because at seventy one years old I now need glasses for reading and driving the car.

Not my mother but my grandma told me a good truth,my parents, better not go there.

My father told me not to come to him with my problems, and to deal with them myself. Best advice anyone ever gave me.

My father, a bigot,  when I was about 12 left Knave, Mayfair and Hustler magazines around for me to find thinking it would prevent me turning gay.

1. If there are group of girls always pick the one wearing a hat.

2. If you should find yourself in a house of ill repute pick the one with a cough.

Yes, my moms always said "nothing comes from doing nothing", and that I should never marry; both have been good advises, especially the latter when it comes to gold digger ladies, they don't seems to glue to me, at least not for long time...:whistling:

My mother would say "If you don't stop doing that it will make you blind" At age 18 I started my own company manufacturing and selling white canes. Now I'm a millionaire.
