A 61-year-old Thai man has been arrested for killing a pregnant wild elephant in the Bor Thong district.

The Bor Thong police reported that the wild elephant was found dead on Saturday (December 11th) near a canal near the Sala Kaew Temple in the Pluang Thong sub-district. The area is outside a wildlife sanctuary. The elephant was heavily pregnant.

The Bor Thong Police arrested the suspect, Mr. Amphon Samrej, 61, yesterday (December 12th). He was arrested at a house in same area where the elephant was found dead.

A reminder never to come between a pregnant female and food.

Especially a wild pachyderm.

Or you could’ve just let her have the bananas!!!

So he sees the elephant eating his bananas, goes out with his gun, tries to shoo her away, but she isn't having it so he shoots her dead. Ye gods. His complete stupidity cost the elephant and her unborn calf their lives.

In Florida they would have called it "stand your ground" ????

A reminder to never stand in front of a Thai with a gun.

Mr. Amphon told police, “I found the elephant was eating bananas on my property not far from my house. I tried to chase her away but the elephant chased after me instead and I feared she was going to attack me. I had to shoot her to protect myself.

Why was he out with an illegal firearm?  Looks like he went out with the intention of killing it.

I wonder whether this case, involving a poor farmer, will take as long to come to a conclusion as the one involving the super-rich Premchai Karnasuta.

And country folks here nearly all have a gun ... and get high on lao kao ... when drunk and upset by something there is a risk that they use it without even thinking about it ... ( they hardly do anyway )

Is this the right country to retire in ... I am not sure anymore ... may be city life is better ...?

Cities you got tooled-up taxi drivers/riders and a fair percentage of the public carry something.

That 'rifle', judging from the size of the bore, is a shotgun. 9

How many organizations, all around the world, would have paid the guy 10 times more than the value of the bananas to not kill the elephant.
