No pardons for corruption, drug trafficking, rape-murder convictions – Survey

Most respondents to recent NIDA Poll do not agree with the granting of pardons to convicted corrupt politicians or officials, rapist-murders, drug traffickers or those convicted of other serious crimes.

 

Thailand’s National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) conducted telephone interviews, from December 13th to 15th, to gauge the opinions of 1,317 people, in various occupations and of different educational backgrounds, concerning the controversial Royal pardon proposed for to many convicts, including those imprisoned for corruption, drug trafficking and other serious crimes.

 

The Royal pardon was initiated by Justice Minister Somsak Thepsuthin and has drawn flak from a wide range of people, including former members of the National Anti-Corruption Commission, Anti-Corruption Thailand, senators and academics, after it was discovered that several former ministers, senior officials and businessmen, currently serving long prison terms for their involvement in the massive corruption in the rice pledging scheme, of the government of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, will receive significant prison term reductions.

Not only for corruption and serious crimes , but also for coupmakers..

I cannot see the need for a system of pardons. Far better to release convicts on licence as is done in other countries. Then they are subject to monitoring and recall if they fail to behave themselves, deliver restitution etc as conditions for their release.

 

Pardons should be reserved for those who have been wrongly convicted, not convicts who can resume their previous activities on release as though they never committed a crime.

Since when has the Government been influenced by Public Opinion?  They don't even listen to the will of the people after a General Election.

This is a poll from people who in the majority don't want these pardons to go ahead. What the majority of people want and think is, right, has no bearing at all, when the corrupt military government are at the helm.

I would say I agree in principle.  But the fact is a lot of people get jailed that are innocent.

I'm shocked that royal pardons are even subject to discussion, let alone a poll.

No need for pardons after the fact…..when you stage your coup take a lesson from 2014 and have all the necessary amnesties prepared well in advance.

Why would there. need to be a pardon system for murdere's and serious drug traffickers, drug trafficking is premeditated, many murders are premeditated so these should be completely exempt from any pardon and given that these people took a life or in case of serious drugs many lives they should suffer the same fate, death!! Corruption seems to be accepted here in Thailand, especially if you are an elected member, in the forces or just a Hiso so these people should be stripped of their position & assets as a lesson. Sadly that won't happen here in my lifetime!!

So exactly what is the point of spending so much time and money bringing these people to trial and jailing them if found  guilty, when the chances are that a pardon could be "arranged" by the same type of corrupt officials that have possibly been given "pardons" themselves?

 

I think that the only reason they are brought to trial in the first place is because the Government/RTP/justice system want to be seen to be "doing something". Another farce in the system is the moving of corrupt police officers to "inactive posts". If they are guilty of a crime, they should be treated the same as a member of the general public, and punished accordingly.

Except in this country politicians get put in prison just for being on the wrong side and too much of a threat to those in control.

The trouble is differentiating between the wrongly convicted and the real bad guys. The B2 scapegoats should be released immediately, the obvious or so called corrupt,they deserve what they get, they are often scapegoats for bigger fish, and there is plenty of fish in the sea at present, they are called politicians bowing to big pharma and ruining the planet worldwide, notice they are all doing the same things.

According to the old constitution, overthrowing a government was punishable with the death penalty.

But amnesties can be torn up by the incoming government should they choose to do so.
