Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul revealed today (Friday) that 205 Omicron cases have been confirmed in the country to date, with the husband-wife couple in Kalasin province, who recently returned from Belgium, being the origin of the most worrying cluster.

The couple’s initial COVID-19 test results were negative and they travelled back to their hometown, before visiting their children in Udon Thani. Relatives who came in close contact with the couple subsequently tested positive for the Omicron variant, which is thought to have come from the couple.

Based on the investigation, 22 people were in close contact them, including 19 restaurant staff and 3 members of the family. Another 100 people are also at risk.

When were they tested the second time and found to be positive with Omicron after testing negative the first time.  Makes one wonder how long its taking to sequence a test and why it can not be checked the first time.....

A sign of what is to come by grandfathering 90,000 T&G holidaymakers including those who will be arriving from current Omicron Hotspots.

One couple tested negative after 24 hours then infecting family members allowed to roam and now potentially infect another 100+.

Multiply that scenario a few times and another lockdown awaits.

So he has a cold and will survive like the vast majority of people.

Just get a few more boosters and maybe you will also have minor symptoms compared to everyone else also getting minor symptoms.

If this picks up and spreads the way it has been doing elsewhere, I am looking forward to Anutins explanation of how he is still doing a brilliant job, as the country sinks around him.

The UK has reported 14 deaths 'with' omicron and 70% less hospitalisations with it. If the Uk continues to have 120,000 infections and day for the next month and only 140 deaths from all covid that would represent a 99.9% or something survival rate - i think that is an acceptable risk if that holds true especially as nearly all those dying are extreme in age , pre-existing condition or unvaccinated

The problem is availability of boosters in Thailand.

The UK deaths have gone up to 24 as of the 22nd Dec but yes I agree. Unless Thailand gives financial support to its affected population which we know it does not, then this is a disaster.

There will be a bunch of unvaccinated people dying from Covid over the next few months.

I expect that you will post about being wrong here, since that would be the right thing to do.

Catching corona especially the omicron variant is not a instant death sentence.

I agree with pretty much all you say, with one exception. From what I read most of the current Uk omicron infections are in people under 40 years. So a caveat being used is that there’s a wait and see situation in terms of its effect on the elderly. Other than that, I’d say you are spot on.

i personally think omicron is a nothing burger that will blow itself out in a month. Just gut feel, nothing to back that up. But take all the vaccinations reducing hospital cases, milder symptoms reducing hospital cases, add in the “miracle” pills alleviating symptoms and reducing length of hospital stays  and really the biggest risk is lack of hospital staff due to their isolating due to having caught the virus. But that blows over pretty quickly.

Old , Fat or sick ? well, that's probably 95% of people on here ????

But how big a bunch and why are they unvaccinated?

The first question will be better forecast  once further studies are done and maybe the rate of those deaths are at an acceptable level. As to the second question, if they choose not to be vaccinated, I have no sympathy for them at all. If they can’t be vaccinated due to medical reasons or lack of vaccine, then the former is a reason for them to take extra care, the latter a shame on politicians.

but I am moving toward the camp that vaccines and better treatments mean that any fear of Covid to the extent of lockdowns, is over done.

I don’t quite understand this comment. Does it mean that if THAILAND gets infected with Omicron just like every other country , that the Health Minister is doing a bad job? I guess that means fire every other Health Minister from every other country in the world right? Because as you know, there is no stopping this. It just has to run its course. We can only vaccinate and get boasters if we choose to do so., that way if we get sick, it won’t be deadly.  If we choose not to get vaccinated, we will get covid. Some will die, some will get really sick, and some won’t even know they have it. Anyways, still don’t understand this comment.

That is a foolish comment.

They are lining up for the booster because they have decided it is the best thing for their health, and that of family and loved ones. Likely also feeling it is best for the overall pandemic situation.....

They are following recommendations.

This was never the point. Omicron will overload hsopitals very quickly if left to run unabated (even if 10x less pathogenic than delta). It's the second more transmissible virus, behind measles. Just watch the US numbers over the next few weeks.
