BANGKOK, Dec 29 (TNA) – A renowned virologist predicts Omicron will be the dominant variant of COVID-19 worldwide in a few months and Thailand may face its 5 th  wave of the disease after the New Year holiday.

 

Prof Dr Yong Poovorawan, chief of the Center of Excellence in Clinical Virology at Chulalongkorn University, said the country already experienced four waves of COVID-19 in 2021.

 

He said that his center found 40-50 Omicron cases out of 96 cases it received for examination. The rate showed that the Omicron variant spread fast. Without public cooperation on disease control, caseloads would soar and the country would face the 5 th  COVID-19 wave after the New Year holiday, he warned.

I guess he needed the publicity to state the obvious which has been known for some time, or did he think it would by pass Thailand to appease the tourist chiefs

You mean they only just noticed all this? Ten year old kids in other countries could have spouted this based on their knowledge of world events. And what’s with the “MAY face a 5th wave”. It’s a racing certainty and everyone knows it.

Here we go again with another local 'expert' putting out reports of news we heard  some weeks ago in European reports.....

(mostly UK) - Omnicron is increasing exponentially (the phrase "resistance is futile" springs to mind), displacing Delta, hospitalisations and deaths stable. Take from that what you will. I have confirmation bias - I always thought locking down the world was stupid, on a pros and cons basis, but now we have generals fighting the last war..

Probably not.

 

Chinese companies haven't been transparent.  If there we're good results it would be all over the news and easily Googled.

 

Just silence as they realize the Billions of people vaccinated are now basically easy targets for Omicron.

 

Just before the Olympics in less than two weeks.   

We are beyond the point where case count even matters. It is clear that this strain is not as deadly and the only thing that really matters is hospitalization and death.

I think the beginning of the 5th wave is already starting Thailand, No need to wait until after New Year ,  8 Omicron cases a week ago now over 700 !!

More so an educator, but very knowledgeable guy and I quite enjoy his posts on YouTube.

 

Campbell received a diploma in nursing from the University of London and Bachelor of Science in biology from the Open University. He subsequently earned a Master of Science in health science from the University of Lancaster and a Ph.D. in nursing education from the University of Bolton.

And it's all good - much lighter variant with less side effects. Build up those antibodies so each strain can get weaker. Let it go, let it go.....!

Totally agree with you there as I was reading an article from Sydney, 11,200 tested positive to Omicron, 3 deaths.

 

Those numbers sound good enough compared to Delta, that said, no talk of ages of the deceased or whether they had pre-existing conditions which is the vital part of the information, and only 61 in ICU.
