First 4 years in Veterinary Pharmacology, then 34 years in the UK Police Forensic Science Service and service in a County Constabulary. Took early retirement at 56 years and moved to Thailand. After almost 20 years moved to Cambodia where I have lived for 2 years. I couldn't sell weed to a pothead but once I took a sales job and realized very quickly that it was a criminal boiler shop out to steal life savings from pensioners. Not only couldn't I do that I wouldn't want to. I don't remember if I called in to say this isn't a fit or just didn't show. Another time I was formally hired with all the paperwork to a high position during a severe recession. The interview process was like central casting for a company and job you'd have to be insane to take The three people that interviewed me were all leaving shortly. But I figured what the heck, this new job title is impressive. Gave it a week and it was even worse than the red flags suggested. So I basically fired myself and they were not at all surprised. I even asked them not to pay me for the week but I don't remember if they did or not. Not featured on my resume! It was on a Friday morning. I was very sad because I needed the money as I just buyed a house a year before. That Friday, coming home and telling my girlfriend that I lost my job was a very hard day. We start thinking about how to proceed with my life and we decided that I would setup my own company. Running in the weekend everywhere to buy and setup the legal thinks and make advertisings in the local newspapers, and by Wednesday I had already 4 orders and the money was coming in. About 2 month's later, I received an URGENT message to come back to the company where I was fired to have a chat. Seemed that Hennessy Cognacs did buy an extension to their existing installation but they would sign the contract ONLY if I would do that extension (I assume that Hennessy wasn't aware that I was fired). I accepted the job, but I would do everything by my own company as a subcontractor and billed them about 10 times the cost if I was working there. Hotel owner apologized to Old Blue Eye's himself and fired me on the spot. Nancy, his Daughter piped up and said "Oh, Uncle Mark, please don't fire him, he looks pretty cool like that". saved my job for about 2 weeks, then I got the pink slip. Went literally just round the corner and immediately got a job with a well known UK Architect and was allowed to continue using the Hotels company car and staff perks for 3 mths whilst working for the Architect. richard_smith237 Posted January 3, 2022 Share Posted January 3, 2022 Never ‘fired’, however, working as a consultant I’ve had the ‘rug pulled from under me’ on three occasions. 1 - Less than a year into a 3 year project: Partners pulled out, the company for whom I was consulting decided not to continue with the next phase of the project - All consultants were binned. 2 - One Week before I was due to travel to Africa for a project - the company pulled the plug, very annoying as I’d chosen this project over others and was left without employment for a few months. 3 - Working on rotation on a long term project - Covid-19 struck, travel became difficult. Company asked if we can commit and stay in country for an extra couple of months ‘riding out the storm’. I could have said no and traveled home to Thailand. I chose to earn more money and show commitment. Two weeks in (and after Thailand closed its borders) the company shut everything down - I was on a repatriation flight to the UK the next day, no job and not knowing when I’d see my family again. Was sent to India to train a couple of guys about how to do a QA job... I was transitioning to a new position, and really couldn't afford the 2 weeks I'd have to spend documenting then going over to physically assure they would do the job... Hellish trip, as they felt they were too good for such a minor job... Processes and procedures in place, returned home... Walked into the office, to be called into a VP's office... Thanked for what a great job I did and Thanks for training my replacements... escorted by a security guard to my desk to clear it out in under an hour... Basically told, don't let the door hit you on the way out (you can't sue us)... Found out, my entire team had been let go while I was overseas, so no one could 'warn' me... My only satisfaction was the India guys basically didn't do the job (which I kinda figured they would do)... and left the company with zero knowledge of what to do... .... Second firing, same situation, sent overseas to train the Indian office... While I was there, the company fired EVP of Engineering, and an entire team (from another major tech company) were brought in overnight... The firings happened while I was overseas... Got back, to find my staff had been fired (after assurances that they would not be), but the bastards fired them the moment I got on a plane back, (and was out of contact)... I was told to do the entire job function of 10 people, with no staff... or budget... I resigned on the spot... I heard they moved all of development to India, and as we all know, they never got the product working, but received plenty of excuses and assurances for FIVE years... Naturally the company folded... .... I, in the mean time, swore never to return to tech (as the outsourcing wave was in full rage)... Burned out, and not willing to take that risk of having my job shipped overseas again... Considered retiring to Thailand the first time...
